Emancipation: Ahead of its time Even though i only like a few parts of it, that crisp, clear production was a few years ahead of productions like Nsync, Britney Spears and Backstreet boys! Now of course it sounds dated!
What u think? | |

I think it was very much 'of its time' rather than ahead of it (which was it's main problem IMO).

More likely just full to the brim of third rate filler, hiding all the good tracks away

Emancipation ahead of its time IMHO yes. There r wonderful songs on the 3 disc CD that r totally beautiful. That’s exactly what’s great about Prince u will always find everlasting treasures in his music.

For 1996, every other "black" album was mellow d'angelo/fugees/r kelly nonsense, this was different and even though I do not like some of it, the production is of its own which I think mighta inspired other producers to take same crispy clear route!

I didnt think so even at that time. I mean Timbaland and Missy were creating the now famously used skip-beats popular at the time and that was innovative. The production in Emancipation was very crisp clean and simple... a little too thin for me at times...but sometimes it was very good like "Funky Music" "When U Love Somebody" "In This Bed Scream" "New World" "Human Body" "La La Means Love U" and "Right Back Here In My Arms" Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

When i say ahead of its time, I only mean a year or so pop wise.....I know my theory needs alot more evidense then this!

...there's a lot of different flavors of music in Emancipation, but I'm not sure if 'Ahead of it's time' is what it is. I just think it's 'UNDERAPPRECIATED'. [Edited 10/7/04 17:19pm]

What u think? No, Sign of the Times was ahead of it's time. But Emancipation was what was needed at the time. Everyone wanted to hear more music from Prince! "A united state of mind will never be divided

[Edited 10/7/04 17:19pm] I agree with you, it is underappreciated, but I really don't think that it was ahead of it's time like 1999 and SOTT "A united state of mind will never be divided
The real definition of unity is 1 People can slam their door, disagree and fight it But how U gonna love the Father but not love the Son? United States of Division"

I agree. The only thing that everyone else EVER does is mellow stuff. Prince is the only one that can still put out some jams. There were definately some jams on that album and there was also some shit. As far as other producers following his direction, they won't. They are too busy making dead stuff so it will get played on the radio. Andy is a four letter word.

Ahead of it's time?
Yeah, it was released years before I finally stop buying Prince albums. Haven't listened to it for years.
