Co-Sign!

It's 2004, and people (yes, that includes a lot of his fans as well) are still hung up on his race. How many times have we seen folks here on the Org saying shit like "he's pandering to a white audience" "he doesn't like black women" "he lied about his race" ?

Who gives a fuck? Black, white, pink-polka dots -it should be about the music, not the skin.

Who cares? Too many, that's who.

Well, it matter to Prince, so why shouldn't it matter to his fans???

Not sure what you mean...Charm...but I stand by my statement...I appreciate his ability to reach all ....no matter their culture or color....and yes he has been "maligned" for not being black enough...etc but continued to what he does best...play his music, his way, and with no apologies. That deserves credit, IMO. thumbs up!

Whoa, slow down there buttercup. I have seen enough to know the difference. On the one hand you have a multi-intsrument-playing, genre-busting, barrier-breaking genius. On the other, you have that one guy who sang with Santana. Apples and oranges. I'm sure I would've heard by now if whatshisname was shaping up to be the next Prince. As for your question, no I haven't seen 'em in concert. Don't intend to. And as I sit here typing this I can't imagine what would make me. Apples and oranges. With a coupla tomatoes on the side.

Because even though we love the music, most of us have never met him and his skin tone has no bearing on our lives. That's why.

I'd like to know why you think it should matter.

Prince didn't start that.....pre-fab (i.e. Appolonia/Vanity 6) groups have been around just as long as "real" artists. (i.e. Prince)

Co-sign most of these smile I think he doesn't get enough credit for putting SO many musicians on throughout the years. I guess some people wish he'd just stayed "Revolution" all these years but I love that he'll grab different people & put them on. It must be such a thrill to work w/ him smile

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Prince is such an underrated guitarist. Open up one of them guitar magazines like Guitar World or Guitar One. What are the chances of you finding a mention or photo of Prince? Very slim.

But the fact is, Prince is one of the greatest human beings to ever pick up a guitar.

His band leadership. His control and live musical vision is truly inspired. His ability to break a groove down, bring it up, cue a solo, introduce new idea to the music with the smallest of gestures. "A'int talkin' bout the house quake.....No! Talkin' bout the.....????"
You do as I say

Everything Prince has done has been calculated. If his intentions were to specifically exclude people that 'looked' a certain way, then it did/does matter to Prince. So my point is, if it matters/mattered to Prince, then why get a screw face about his fans caring about it also, even if their reasons for caring is different.

That's like when someone says that Jesus did not have blonde hair and blue eyes, folks start saying that it does matter. Well it shouldn't matter, but obviously the people that painted him that way thought it mattered.

My point is that it was intentional. Prince felt he had to do certain things to become a cross-over artist, even if that meant lying about being half-white, disassociating himself with black women and any of the other things he did to have his music heard. He didn't want to be relegated to the 'Black' division of the record company, which is/was understandable. Prince is a Black man, he knew how things worked, he did what he had to do and it worked for him. More power to him. It's funny how you mention Prince supposedly being maligned for not being 'black' enough, but in 2004, he is accused by some fans of being 'too' black. hmmm

What is it for a man to gain the world and lose his soul. wink

I don't think Prince gets enough credit for anything. My friends talk about how he's gay and sounds like a woman. i get so pissed. Prince is great at everything he does. He doesn't get enough credit for his singing, songwriting, dancing, and instrumental talents. I don't think anyone realizes that he is a friendly hardworking guy. Who will, unfortunately, never get all the credit he desrves. Personally, i think it's impossible to give him all that credit he deseves, because you can't put a number or enough words into it! Prince you are the absolute best musician EVER and will ALWAYS be!!!!!

Right on Purple Charm. RnB music is popular with masses today. 20 years ago a black artist was labeled disco and given short shift by the music industry. If Prince did not separate himself he would not still be around. At the same time he never abandoned RnB music.

Brother Ray did the commercial, but Prince wrote the song. I guess it does seem like I'm reaching on that one, but not many folks know to credit that to Prince.
