Prince and Beyonce I know u probably talked about this subject be4, but I’m totally unaware of it. I would like 2 know wtf was P thinking when he had Bounce perform with him on the Grammy’s. Don’t get me wrong, I love Beyonce and I know she is real hot right now, but I was shocked 2 see her of all people singing Purple Rain with him. I thought they looked ok together but I wanted 2 see him along. This was his 1st public TV performance in years and he should have performed along. Even Tavis Smiley spoke on this same subject.
This year I have purchased every magazine with P on or in it and I have 2 read about that Grammy performance with him and Beyonce every time. It’s bad enough that each interview or article with him they bring up the Grammy’s LOL. Sorry, but I need 2 know if I’m the only 1 feeling this way. Believe me I am trying 2 get over it but it’s hard when u keep hearing people talk about that opening night at the Grammy’s.

It is really sickening. She ruined Purple Rain, in my opinion. Then danced around trying to imitate Tina Turner, making Prince come off as if he were Ike Turner. It was defintely a low point in his career, but for some strange reason, people loved it. 2004 was great an all, but I wish the duet with Beyoncé would've never happened. He could've still had a succesful year without it.

Alright now, Legs is going to give her . Like the rest of you, I was looking foward to seeing P by himself on the Grammies. But, somehow, I got to admit as much as I hate to say it, Beyonce pulled it off. Believe me, I am far from being a fan of hers. But, I will say that she won some creditability in my book to even perfom well with P.
His performance with her was a great deal of shock value to the media b/c they know P isn't going to share his stage w/anybody. Whoever performs with P must be able to hold his/her weight. Indeed, Beyonce did hold her own. Other than her performance with P, I could care less about her b/c she needs to refine her voice contol. However, she is on her way vocally and is miles ahead of Mary J Blige.

unbelievable... Don't you all understand how much MORE attention PRINCE got from EVERYONE having Beyonce at his side performing at the Grammys?
Do you really think ET, ACCESS, MTV, VH1, BET, EXTRA, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, etc. would have paid as much attention without her? HA

Prince was asked by the Grammy committee if he would perform with beyonce. He said Yes with one condition, that he opened the show. That's how it came about.

HA I totally disagree; P would have gotten the same publicly without her. P ain’t just anybody. He is a living legend. Beyonce hope she can stand the test of time. P took himself out of the lime light due 2 his battle with WB. So u mean 2 tell me that his performance at the Grammy’s with Beyonce is what caused all the attention? Please! ET, ACCESS, MTV, VH1, BET, EXTRA, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, etc., would have had the same interest regardless. He doesn’t need anyone on his side 2 gain attention. He was over due on all the attention he received. If u noticed Beyonce worked real hard 2 keep up with P and I give her credit 4 that, and that along.

B was trying to do a Tina number and P had some chilli sauce ala Morris Day going. I was definitely jammnin with their asses. They turned the Grammies out.

That performance was the main reason i tuned in to the show in the first place. It was the best performance i've seen at any Grammy show. I at first did not think it would work also, but i will admitt she did a great job. If it was not for that performance i do think Prince would not have been even talked about as much. Yeah! you would have heard it was nice of Prince to open the Grammies celebrating the anniversary year of Purple Rain. Without Beyonce it would have been looked at as an average performance.

His performance was the ONLY reason I watched the Grammy's last year.

And as for her looking like Tina Turner in that dress? She doesn't have the legs to pull off Tina Turner. ::Tina Turners legs::

Come on people beyonce is the hottest solo female in the biz right now. I think the performance was good. Mainly because they did my favorite Prince song "Baby I'm a Star" "Thinking like the Keys on Prince's piano, we'll be just fine"

nobody better ever bag on Mayte or Apollonia again then as being "talentless". (I'm not saying Beyonce is talentless although I myself don't think her Grammy performance with Prince showed her to be any more than what she is..and you can take that any way you want) I would've preferred to see Prince perform at the Grammys without the addition of the flavor-of-the-month eye candy, but oh well.

Oh Come On, I know so many ppl who don't even watch those crapped half ass award shows...but they did this year and it was mainly because of its line up and PRINCE!
I know many ppl who said to me, how they loved his performance and thought Beyonce was not needed! So yes the press wouldv'e been all over him without her! They did for the MUSICOLOGY TOUR AND VIDEO, plus the album was a critics favorite and the grammy's are mentioning him for nods at 2005 ceremony! Why are you on here? If you think he isn't that important to the music world! Prince has pulled off so many fantastic stunts in the last year, that not even madonna or micheal jackson could have! PRINCE definitely still demands attention and popularity amongst not only the musicians musician, but also the press! NUFF SAID!

I disagree. In fact, I have run across many people who thought Beyonce wasn't necessary, and were put out that she got any mike time at all. And these people are just super casual Prince fans. S Filthy cute and baby U know it

It was the 20th anniversary of PR and there was Prince performing with (as someone has previously mentioned) [one of the] hottest current performers. The Grammys got the best of both worlds and P got to show he is supporting new talent and we got to see a legend etc etc it was all carefully thought through by all parties I am sure.
I enjoyed it. Did anyone else think the dove appearing at the end of Byonce's later performance on the show was another P reference? Probably reading too much into it - but I went there! Call her green and the winter cannot fade her

From the time PRince walked out, people in the audience were happy. I think they would have enjoyed a performance alone by him but it wouldn't have been the most highly talked about feature of the night. Beyonce gave him drama.
I highly doubt Prince would have performed alone. Without Beyonce, He would have had the NPG up there with him, and it would have been nothing more than a glorified Jay Leno performance. That's not enough for the Grammy's. Prince alone would have been exciting for fans -- and only the fanatical variety. He came out singing a medley of 20 year old songs that needed fresh life. Beyonce created a chemistry with Prince that brought electricity out of him and sparked the performance with sensuality. She was great -- more dynamic in voice and presence than Prince, actually. Prince was dynamic on the guitar and he played off Beyonce well. Thank god she was there. Prince typically sounds bored singing these old songs. He's tired of them. P and B were the talk of the world because they found a chemistry that worked. She oozed all the sexuality and sensuality that theh legendary PRince once had but has in some measure lost.

Oh, and I should say she gave one of the best interpretations of Purple Rain I've seen in a long time.
To have it a duet, and hear the man and the woman perspectives. They way she sang "I never wanted to be your weekend lover .... It's such a shame our friendship had to end," gave me goosebumps. First the first time, actually, I understood the agony of the song. The intense attraction to a confidante that goes accidentally too far. Then you ruin the friendship and the marriage you didn't want to desecrate. She jumps up and down and belts that out. I felt that sadness. She really read a lot of emotion into those legendary lines. It was a marvelous moment.

The thing is...
Prince always wanted to work with Beyonce. He has expressed this since the very late 90s.

you live in a fantasy world if you truly believe the whole world would've stopped dead in their tracks to see Prince perform alone on the grammys -- no way. No matter how fantastic a performer he is, no matter how exciting -- he had to do something splashy to get the GENERAL public's attention -- and right now... Beyonce is really hot. It was a smart smart move to match them up. No matter how much a hardcore fan wanted to see him alone... How many of those kids that got & keep Beyonce and Destiny's Child at #1 on Billboard charts, and TRL, and BET, etc. -- how many of them really LOVED prince before this year? Beyonce was used a gateway to get a LARGER audience's attention.
if you can't see that...ugh

pennylover, I totally agree with you...till this day, I'm still mad about that, don't care what anyone got to say. I still think PRINCE should have SANG 'Purple Rain'. I don't care how good or whatever how she sang that song, no matter where you are right now, YOU give Prince the damn floor when you're up there with him, not you take over. I thought she should've known better, but I guess all the media heads got them not thinking straight. Prince didn't NEED her as some claim, and yeah, people 'loved' the performance and it got a lot of raves and attention, but it just solely had to do with the fact that Prince was finally up there, not that she was up there with him. It was a DAMNED shame that he had her ass up there performing with him. It was totally selling out to go along with the whole theme of the awards show that night.....old school performing with new school. Prince has always been the rebel of these type of things. Remember when he refused to sing on "We Are The World" in 1985 and also refused again in the 1990s on the American Music Awards.
As far as him getting attention from the younger crowd.....that's exactly what I DON'T want him getting. Next thing he will be watering down his music to suit their tastes. If they like Prince, that is fine but if they don't....who needs them. Beyonce should have perfomed with some little no talent thug that suits her much better and Prince should have performed alone. If he absolutely HAD to perform with someone else, it should have either been George Clinton or Earth, Wind, and Fire. Other FUNK artists, not HIP HOP! I would rather see him performing with Larry Graham than with Beyonce. [Edited 10/6/04 3:48am] Andy is a four letter word.

If that was the best Grammy awards show by Prince that you've seen, I seriously feel sad for you. I heartily encourage you to loop up and download the 27th Grammy awards performance. Great show! Energy, spirit and Sheila E. No Beyonce there or needed..... I feel that everything is right in the world everytime I see Wendy 's father, our very own papa Melvoin introdicing Prince and the Revolution..... Sirah
