Jess, HOUSEQUAKE is 'nice' but it lacks the GRIT of the Org. U have 2 defend urself here which often lends 2 sharper analysis.

Eye also rarely find any IN-DEPTH discussion there, whereas there's PLENTY going on here (even if it's just the POLITICS and RELIGION section).

I guess I hate being put on the defensive! I get your point about in-depth discussions here, but along with that, the pendulum swings to the opposite extreme - inanity. I'm more comfortable somewhere in the middle. I'm getting old.

And what was this reference all about, "minor keys and drugs don't make a rollerskate jam"?

Just my thoughts on this one:

Kids in the 70's (at least in America) would go rollerskating to the top 40 hits of the day as a common Friday night social activity. You could get your skate on to some really positive, fun uptempo music spun in real time by the roller-rink DJs. I remember major key jams like Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music running right into The Commodore's Brick House and wrapping up with KC and The Sunshine Band's Get Down Tonight. Groovalacious!

Kids in the 90's and 00's don't seem to have the same positive jam options. Most of what they listen to now is all about alcoholism, drugs and set to minor keys. With real dance music marginalized by skater punk rock and hip hop, I think Prince is asking - "How can you roller skate to those?"

Hi Anj! Good to finally see you on the Club forums.
[Edited 10/5/04 12:16pm]

Young people don't rollerskate -but I get the point. There's a shortage of upbeat, fluffy music in the past decade or so. I think that's why the boyband/pop explosion in the late 90's was so huge -people were desperate for something, anything that was a little happier, even if it was of questionable quality.

And I still like Backstreet Boys. Shh! shhh

You mean young people today don't rollerskate? I can see that's true. Although, once in a while I'll catch an 'inline blader' on the streets of Silver Lake in Los Angeles. I wish today's kids could find something as communal and upbeat as we had back in the day.

Confession: I own a Backstreet Boys CD too.

Rollerskating and rollerblading aren't quite the same thing, but no matter. I wish there was something communal too. There's such a division (where I live, anyway) between the social cliques. The goths don't talk to the preps, the punks don't talk to the jocks, etc. There's not much by the way of outright violence here, but there's a huge amount of underlying hatred. It'd be great if there was something the different groups could have in common.....

Its a shame that yet again here on the Org. A quite nice piece of writing has turned into 80% of folk over analysing for the purpose of trying to demine the author.

Racism. Simple and Plain. Dress it up how you will.

It isn't extreme sensitivity either. Just Common sense. I know better than to make an utterly stupid racial slur as you did. Don't expect not to be criticised for it.

But if u r b ing so "logical", then eye assume u blieve P is a racist. Ever heard the lyric, "Dancing like a WHITE girl..."?

i would consider certain Prince lyrics as racist, yes, most definately. I don't agree with them either. So your point is? Prince has racist tendancies so i will, too?

I didn't Catergirise you as a racist. I'm demonstrating that your writing holds racist connotations.

In all respect, you don't know me at all. I do find humour in many things. However, Derogatory comments are not one of them (with the intent to humour or not). If i want racist humour then i'll go to a KKK open mic night. Understand that your comment does indeed hold racist conotations. It is wrong to expect that some people will not criticise your remarks and that instead they will simply just feel your 'groove'.

"All the white people clap your hands on the 4 now". As i stated earlier, i believe certain prince lyrics to hold racial conotations. Besides, i don't hang on every word Prince says.do i have to agree with all he sings? You may tell me that Prince is singing this jokingly so its not racist. It is racist, albeit at lower degree of severity than other forms of racism i.e. physical violence. Does this mean that we have to laugh? No. What is sadder to me is that the line is placed slap bang in the centre of a song about knocking down stereotypes, freedom and equality for all. Also, whats your point with this? i dont agree with racial slurs or stereotypical comments from any source - see it just keeps the lines apart and aids in breeding more predjudice. Even if it is done in the name of 'humour', to my mind It's just a catalyst for society to express masked racial dislike at a subconcious level.

Why? earlier in the thread you stated how much you loved the 'grit' of the org and the need for sharper analysis in defending ones self. What changed?

We both know why i called you what i did, dont we? Or do i need to go into that part of your essay, too? You didnt respond to my 'hate' or should that read 'anger' as you are well aware of the reason for my ouburst. It may just act to further show your true colours as well as reaffirming my own beliefs that you are predjudice regarding physical appearance.

My comments were made in reference to the only thing that an individual can be truly judged on - what they do and what they say. Not what they look like. You deserved every word of them.

ITV news (England) just had a news item on. A football coach was caught on film telling his player to go after a player of the opposition. What he actually said was "Go after that black sh*t". When quized by the press he claimed that he was 'merely joking' and that some of his best friends were black! oh my. I was gonna get mad at his comments until i learned that he was only joking. I guess he isn't a racist after all, then. rolleyes
