Musicology at the Org

"Take ur pick - turntable or a band? If it ain't Chuck d or Jam Master J. Know what? They're losin'." A simple nod to the pioneers on the wheels of steel, otherwise it's real music by real musicians. So why then was Musicology a programmed track?! And what was this reference all about, "minor keys and drugs don't make a rollerskate jam"? Chips and whips, meaning money and cars, Doris as in Duke, and was the pimp black or white? Could Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance possibly have been a reference to his relationship with Warners Bros, "U better get busy if u want 2 get paid. Boy I was fine back in tha day." Without a doubt, the fan's first choice for single was A Million Days. We begged and cried for it but oh no...The fan's least favourite track, cast off as a Newpower Soul outtake even, Life O The Party. Didn't they dig Candy's accent?! Delve a little deeper, it's funk on a much higher level we were told- check the oriental vibe bubbling underneath. Still, everyone loved "all the purple hippies bang ur heads on the 1". A soul radio favourite although some white folk weren't feeling Call My Name, have any of them got soul?! And was that Mani saying Prince's name at the end? Oh boy, did Cinammon Girl take off or what?! Again, another fan favourite and popular choice for single, but the video took it to a whole other level. Was that the first consensus among the community in a long while? The video was that good! This shouldn't have been banned but even we were grappling with what the director was trying to get across following the first few watchings. Did Keisha really bomb the airport, or was it her imagination? More importantly, was Prince missing the point in suggesting that terrorism stemmed from prejudicial stereotyping as opposed to fundamental religious fanaticism. The messages hit home.

Some were feeling What Do U Want Me 2 Do? all the way back to the days of Dorothy Parker, and we liked THAT. Prince looking all cool in the red but oh lawd, who was the girl with one tooth behind him in the inlay?! We all felt the humour come back with this album, especially after how heavy hearted The Rainbow Children sounded. "I'm gonna put her on the same diet Missy went on. U know she eat too much." That line from The Marrying Kind had us rollin' on the floor! Was he dissin' Missy, or his woman?! Yet another huge fan favourite, If I Was The Man In Ur Life, and yet another missed opportunity for a single. Oh boy, the song was just jammin'...people were feelin' this just like they were with Illusion. He said what in On The Couch? He's going down south?? Naw, he didn't, did he?! "I can feel the blood racin' with the thought of u tastin me", the brother was getting real spiritual here. Why was Dear Mr. Man edited, it needed to go on longer. Definitely felt like a classic...and touching on tricky ground, did he really suggest there was no use in voting?! And was this a JW-inspired lyric or just a tired outlook on things? And finally, my personal favourite...Reflection. Who didn't feel the emotion when Prince looked at Wendy after he sang, "It's about love"?

For an album that was supposedly Prince-lite, there sure has been a lot to discuss, debate, argue and celebrate. And what with the appearance with Beyonce at the Grammies to that brilliant guitar solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps, the induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain, it really has been one rollercoaster of a year. I'm tired y'all, and Europe hasn't even seen the tour yet! Prince, the NPG, and the fans, you all deserve an applause. Take a bow...

Yeah, the album was sooooo great that people spent most of the time dicussing these trivial aspects of it as opposed to how great an album it is.

Also, Anji, you are too keen to speak for the whole of us. I disagree with much of what you say in your essay. You may like to change the 'we' for 'many of us' or 'some of us'.

And what was this reference all about, "minor keys and drugs don't make a rollerskate jam"?

Just my thoughts on this one:

Kids in the 70's (at least in America) would go rollerskating to the top 40 hits of the day as a common Friday night social activity. You could get your skate on to some really positive, fun uptempo music spun in real time by the roller-rink DJs. I remember major key jams like Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music running right into The Commodore's Brick House and wrapping up with KC and The Sunshine Band's Get Down Tonight. Groovalacious!

Kids in the 90's and 00's don't seem to have the same positive jam options. Most of what they listen to now is all about alcoholism, drugs and set to minor keys. With real dance music marginalized by skater punk rock and hip hop, I think Prince is asking - "How can you roller skate to those?"

Hi Anj! Good to finally see you on the Club forums.

Jess, HOUSEQUAKE is 'nice' but it lacks the GRIT of the Org. U have 2 defend urself here which often lends 2 sharper analysis.

Eye also rarely find any IN-DEPTH discussion there, whereas there's PLENTY going on here (even if it's just the POLITICS and RELIGION section).

If 'we' does not refer to everyone at the org then who does it refer to?

All that a disagree with? OK

You Said-

"Without a doubt, the fan's first choice for single was A Million Days. We begged and cried for it but oh no...The fan's least favourite track, cast off as a Newpower Soul outtake even, Life O The Party."

I say -
"I'm a fan. The fans 1st choice eh? Without a doubt? u sure? Sorry, not my choice. Did 'We' beg and cry for it? Again, not all of us. Was what 'we' got instead 'the fans' least favourite track? No, i dont remeber a consenus. You cannot speak for an intire fan base.

You Said -
" Still, everyone loved "all the purple hippies bang ur heads on the 1".

Wow! So it's 'EVERYONE' now?

You Said -

"A soul radio favourite although some white folk weren't feeling Call My Name, have any of them got soul?!"

I say-

Was this nessecary? I am sure that there are 'SOME' Black people didnt like this track, too? Why did you feel the need to point out that a particular group of individuals dislike a song and suggest that their skin colour has any influence upon their musical preference? U can only have soul if your Black, Right? Wrong.

Need i go on? Perhaps. Can i be arsed? Nope.

Young people don't rollerskate -but I get the point. There's a shortage of upbeat, fluffy music in the past decade or so. I think that's why the boyband/pop explosion in the late 90's was so huge -people were desperate for something, anything that was a little happier, even if it was of questionable quality.

And I still like Backstreet Boys. Shh! shhh

to be honest ive always viewed princes views as that youve got to be able to do it live, not just programmed, he's not dumb (even though he does say some things that are...questionable) he knows full well he was a pioneer in all that drum machine etc shit, but he can go out and rip it live and many many artists cant. ive always taken it as that being his point.

Without a doubt, the fan's first choice for single was A Million Days. We begged and cried for it but oh no...

not much to add to what the other guy said, but i dont even think it was a majority wanting this song, everyone named their own song for exactly the same reasons half the time. i want song "x" cos it showcases prince on the guitar, and its a great summer song, and its a hit etc

Didn't they dig Candy's accent?! Delve a little deeper, it's funk on a much higher level we were told- check the oriental vibe bubbling underneath. Still, everyone loved "all the purple hippies bang ur heads on the 1".

io like the use of horns on this one, i think candy can sing, but i dont think its as individual a singing style enough really, so it just makes it sound generic, which is a shame as a like candy (though i still think saxuality it pretty poo), but her voise just isnt that great, same when she sings on the one/question of u video.

Ah boy, did Cinammon Girl take off or what?! A

you're acting like you're talking about something sooo long ago, and not the fact its not even on radio yet, stop being so melodramatic! wink

This shouldn't have been banned but even we were grappling with what the director was trying to get across following the first few watchings. Did Keisha really bomb the airport, or was it her imagination?

to be honest, ive seen it once, and im surprised anyone can think she really did bomb the airport, it just shows you cant grasp a narrative that isnt stricly linear in a very simple sense!

Who didn't feel the emotion when Prince looked at Wendy after he sang, "It's about love"?

i fully agree with you on this one! oh to be a fly on the wall to listen to their conversation to plan that performance.

i suppose this post shouldnt surprise me, you seem to be a very intense person! confused

just cos it says at the org doesnt mean it has to be animated and dramatic. i mean, all the stuff you mentioned was pretty old, nothing new, nothing not done to death, so i didnt see why it needed to be dramatic.

and thanks for the cheap insult rolleyes i purposely avoided insulting you or being rude, i could have quite easily. i dont bother going on other forums but id say the stuff you write on this forum, is quite intense and so on.
