A very hard lyric for me to listen to. I grew up Catholic in a semi-religious family (we went to Church...and said Grace) but I became really religious during my last year of High School and beyond (Bible Studies, Retreats, Revivals).

It was after I came out, I became really conflicted with being gay and hearing that I didn't fit in with Catholic religion and the whole God hates gays thing. I turned away. It was hard but I decided I could no longer be a part of something that rejected me. I actually came to the belief of there is a higher power that rules all..it may be just the universe...but something that holds order over most things. I certainly came to the thinking that God would not care about us puny germs on a planet in a huge universe as much as to give them strict rules to live by. I believe that whatever being that is out there has to be spiritual. I don't believe in a God..Christian God anymore.

I am still spiritual...and even felt that Prince believed in a higher spirit and didn't chain himself to the thinking of the Christian God that is present today...I stand corrected. I also get asked to pray or say grace during Family gatherings...and I do.

So everytime I hear this lyric, a piece of me agrees and sighs..and i move on.
