Dated sounds mean jack to me. If its good music...its good music, no matter if the sounds used were in fashion 20 years ago. I really hope it grows on you, because it is excellent once you get into it. pray

I've been into Electronic ( ie.e detroit techno ) for about 6 years now and 1999 is one of the few albums I can go back to that doesn't have dated stuff on it.

Sure LRC and 1999 is 1980's

But SOmething in the Water,
Automatic,
All the Critics,
gosh that stuff is so progressive.

Somthing in the water sounds like massive attack before they were even thought of.
All the critics, sounds like Green Velvet,

I love 1999.

Also,, I hated little red corvette back in the day but now the music is amazing. Especially the 12"

The only other album I listen to more is Sign' t

I love the synth overload! When I got 1999 in the 80's, I immediately loved LRC, 1999, Let's Pretend We're Married, and DMSR. At the time, I thought Automatic was a really strange song. Its length also irritated me. I always fast-forwarded past it (back in the days of tapes). I pulled out my old tape of 1999 this summer and now I can't get enough Automatic. Twenty years later, I think it is fantastic and still love all my original favorites too. So you never know, maybe in twenty years you will appreciate its brilliance.

1999 just may be one of those "you had to be there albums." It's definitley a classic but if you're fairly young and don't have any experiences to associate with what was going on in your life when that album came out I can see why you dont care for it.

Such brave steps to take pal, especially with the reputation I've read about orgers and stone throwing. Aside from the song 1999 and maybe delirious, it's considerably one of his best albums, and he deserved the accolades for it. But don't be afraid to stand your ground, you'll be stronger for the cause.

ach so young cool
1999 was my first Prince album and whenever i put it on it still sounds as fresh and funky as it did when i was 10.
tis a great album.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

This album is in my top 5, as well, and it's the first album I bought after Purple Rain turned me onto Prince. Ah the days of constantly flipping both records all day every day, day after day after day. Makes you really appreciate a CD.

This is an album that desperately needs remastering. We passed the 20 year mark two years ago. Maybe a 25th anniversary remaster will come about.

I just realized I'm really fucking old.

blimey...this sort of thread makes me feel very old...without wishing to sound like an elitist old fart, but isn't 1999 just one of those essential P albums every fan buys the minute the P bug bites? Heaven help us all if Emancipation or one of those other turgid throwaway late 90s albums has replaced it in the buying heirarchy...

And I agree, the dated argument is nonsense...and an odd thread to start in the first place...perhaps give it a few days before posting?

Right, now back to my old people's home for the over-30s Prince fan...

Why have you heard the bootlegged demo version before the actual album? You know, you really shouldn't get into the outtakes material if you haven't heard the actual albums first. That's just a completely wrong order of getting into things.

As far as an album sounding "dated", basically every song by every artist sounds like the music from that era. All the music today sounds "dated". The only reason people don't think it does is because music has sounded the same for the last 15 years. If the today's musical style EVER changes, people are going to call these last 15 years "dated".
Andy is a four letter word.

'Is this actually really cheesy??'
So I don't think its for everyone for sure
