I think it's evident that P put a lot of effort into that album. 'Ol school Prince headz just weren't diggin' the clean sound. But I can see where P was coming from. The dirty/raw sound had been done to death. Heck, I prefer the version my dad used to do back in his club days, but I won't knock P for trying.

I think P's music has suffered greatly from being recorded at Paisley Park.

Being locked up there, I don't think it's done his sound much favours.

i hardly bust out "emancipation" anymore these days, and when i do, i usually listen to a condensed CD-R of my favorites that i made and slipped into the CD case. it's called "abbreviation".

i really do like Prince's version of "Betcha By Golly Wow" -- sounds like his own. That and Bonnie Raitt's "I Can Make U Love Me" are two of the best covers Prince has ever committed to an album. Both of these songs were part of my courtship phase with a very beautiful woman -- very fitting and romantical. They have a special place in my heart, even after a heart-breaking end to the same relationship. "Betcha" is beautiful! I still hear it on the radio from time to time (easy-listening) which is always a nice surprise.

I absolutely love Emancipation and rate it pretty highly
You should get it if for Disc 2 alone
He seems so happy, but not cheesy

PS. I was 12 when Betcha by Golly wow was out as a single for P
and I swore it was my favorite song and that Id marry the
cuteset boy in my call to that song batting eyes

So I will admit that I do like his version
even thought its no original
If you will, so will I

These day's you can get it so cheap why not? It's 3 discs of hit and miss. Personally, I think Prince spoils the fans and thus they get so picky he can't do anything right. I like most of emancipation and it's impressive breadth. The second disc has the best songs for me, beautiful lovesongs even some goofy hip-hop on Joint to Joint. It baffles me to hear people constantly bicker over the quality of his music, most of it's good stuff, but most importantly, who the hell else is there to listen to really? I've been wearing out musicology, love it, just love it, I could care less what anyone else thinks of it's merits or lack thereof.

Emancipation has some really good tracks on it(Face Down, White Mansion, Right Back In My Arms, Holy River, Sleep Around)...and I actually like the covers on it. Its not one of my absolute faves, though, mainly because of its length. I just can't get into it as a whole, plus there is some major filler on it (Mr Happy, E-Male, Get yo groove on...many others). I know he was wanting to release a triple album ever since WB made him edit Crystal Ball back in 86/87, but he should've waited until he had tracks as strong as the ones intended for the original CB.

Some of the best songs Prince has ever written: The Love We Make, Saviour, The Holy River, Joint to Joint, Human Body, Curious Child, Face Down, and Soul Sanctuary <--- those are the ones i find myself going back to again and again, probably in that order, The problem is: most of the other songs (and there's a lot) are ones i can't stand to listen to.
