Does anybody know about "The Dawn?" Does anyone remember in 1996 Prince talked about finishing his project called "The Dawn?" I remember reading an interview where he talked about a song that he almost put on Emancipation, but then decided to keep it for the Dawn because it was "too good." The article declared "The Dawn" as his ultimate statement. Who can tell me more?

There was a small article in Rolling Stone on Prince back in 1989 or 1990 that talked about Prince working on his next movie, Graffiti Bridge. The article also mentioned that Prince was going to do a few other films (all under the headship of Alan Leeds or Albert Magnoli or both, I forget). I think one of the films was a Jimi Hendrix movie (maybe Robert Johnson), and I believe another was the "Dream Factory" project or something like it (which Prince had been wanting to do since the Dirty Mind-era, as mentioned in an earlier Rolling Stone interview, 1985?) -- I think this latter film was supposed to be The Dawn that he mentioned later on. Anyway, I always thought "The Dawn" was in reference to Jesus' 2nd Coming, but I guess the meaning has changed over the years.
Hmm... I wonder if "The Grand Progression" is meant to be one of those songs? I know he really likes that one. [Edited 9/30/04 18:49pm]

I remember Prince talking about making a movie called "The Dawn" right after "Purple Rain" came out. I only heard it mentioned once and never heard it again. Andy is a four letter word.

There have been several projects (as stated above) with the title 'The Dawn'.
Prince did mention 'The Dawn' being a follow-up to Emancipation, but it never materialised. The time before that was the 93/94 project (See the 'More evidence of Come 1993 for info on that from our very own Princeologist Borisfishpaw :notworthy: ) It was mentioned as a movie project around the time of Graffiti Bridge (as stated above) And 'The Dawn' from 1986, you could say the idea of rivaling bands was taken from this when Graffiti Bridge was re-written to include The Time. That 1986 was featuring two rival bands, one The CoCo Boys, and starring Prince opposite Terry Casey (of Mazarati). Songs from that project: The CoCo Boys, Crucial, When The Dawn Of The Morning Comes.

So "May U Live 2 See The Dawn" was just a promotional catch phrase even to begin with. And all this time I thought it was supposed to be something really mystical.

I guess it's just more of his Second Coming obsession. I did think it was cute how, when he changed his name, he changed the phrase to "Welcome 2 The Dawn" as if 'his spirit' had planned it all the time Gotta love Prince's self-made mythology!
