Housequake.com gets letter from Prince about "illegal" material For those of you who have not heard. Housequake.com got a letter from Paisley Park Enterprises about "illegal" material on the site. Meaning the discussions os bootlegs, and the use of his likeness on the website.
This sucks. First the Guide2prince.org now Housequake.com. How long before he comes after Prince.org?

So do you think if we drew pictures of Prince for the calender that will be deemed as unauthorised? Maybe we can invent some kind of code names for songs we would like to discuss? Discuss these bootlegs in backstreet drinking dens wearing disguises?
Maybe Prince and the NPGMC should try and start putting this kind of info there and they would not need to fight off this fierce competition from sites such as these. As a member of NPGMC I have to say, and I am sure I am not alone, that the majority of my time is spent discussing all things Prince anywhere but there... Simple solution. Stop talking/trading/buying bootlegs, stop uploading/looking at pictures and stop discussing anything Prince related. Stop buying singles, dvd’s and albums from NPGMC and other official outlets.
Abolish all things Prince. Then lets see how successful this “come back” really is. The words ‘dead’ and ‘duck’ spring to mind. I have never known such stupid and irresponsible business acumen as this. His fan base is his market! Who in their right mind would do this to their market? Talk about doing a Ratner. see, that letter's all very well but there's two points here. the first is whether or not trading bootlegs which have already been purchased constitutes copyright infringement. I'm not a US lawyer; i don't know. I doubt very much that trading (i.e not reproducing or selling) of boots which have already been made and are in the hands of the traders constitutes infringement (though the original manufacture and sale of the boots, I suspect, would) regardless of the trading issue, i can't see for a moment how one could pin down and say discussion of bootlegs per se induces people to infringe copyright. And Prince's lawyers have to go one step further here, and claim that Housequake is indirectly inducing, causing or materially contributing to the infringement (be it trading, if that is an infringement, or whatever). Horsepoo. In summary, Prince is a dick.  | |
