Prince reference in "Shaun of the Dead" movie

I haven't seen this posted in any of the other forums but I watched the spoof-horror flick "Shawn of the Dead" this past weekend and caught a reference to Prince that everyone else in the theater seemed to miss.
Our hero, Shawn, a loser who neglects his girlfriend and mum and works as an electronics clerk in a dead-end middle management job, and his best friend, couch-potato videogaming flatulant unemployed loser buddy, Ed, are fleeing two flesh-eating zombies. After hearing on a news broadcast that only destruction of the brain or decapitation can stop these monsters, they go hunting for weapons or other objects they can use to kill, fling at or otherwise immobilize their attackers.
Ed finds a bin of Shawn's old vinyl records. After rifling through some old rockers, Shawn gets to his old Prince albums, even as the zombies advance.
Shawn: "Purple Rain?"
Ed: "No."
Shawn: "Sign o' the Times?"
Ed: "No."
Shawn: "Batman soundtrack?"
Both freeze, staring at each other.
FLLLLIIIINNNNGGGG!!!
OK, it was funnier in the theater. But what made this movie so funny was that it's set in England and the characters, who already act ridiculous, are speaking in these cockney British accents. I thought it would be stupid, and yes, in a way it was, but I did enjoy the movie. Anyone else see it yet?

do you actually believe that nobody in the theatre heard the dialogue regarding Prince but you? I think there is a difference between missing a joke and not thinking the joke is funny. Nobody laughed but you because nobody cared. doesn't mean they missed it, it means it is an inside joke for Prince fans.
this message brought to you by logic.

I suggest the mod's set up a new forum, specifically for the use of posting news that there is a tiny Prince gag in Shaun Of The Dead.

Firstly, this has been posted many times before.

This is because it came out first in the UK ages ago - in fact it has been out on DVD over here for a while now. Just shows America doesn't get everything first occasionally!

I'm pretty certain you've got the dialogue the wrong way round. What Ed says is what Shaun says, and vice versa.

Although being 'set in England' and speaking 'Cockney accents' might be funny to you, in fact it was set in the UK because it was made and acted by people from the Uk, and those accents were not false - they were just how they talk (and not really cockney either). Dick van Dyke doing cockney in Mary Poppins, now that's a funny cockney accent. Chas and Dave, now that's cockney.

Personally what I thought what was funny about the movie was all the jokes and comedic scenes. My favourite scene was when they are clubbing the zombie pub owner in time to an Abba song. I wonder if somewhere there is an Abba forum saying for the umpteenth time, did you catch that Abba reference in 'Shaun of the Dead' movie!

Yes, I was the only person in the cinema that laughed out loud as well.

falloff

These threads on the 'SHAUN' reference were annoying, but now i find them sickly amusing! Especially the replies!

It's strange that we all find ourselves clicking on them!

Lay off the poster, he's only trying to share his experience with us.

Funny that you corrected someone for getting part of the movie wrong then say they clubbed the pub owner to an ABBA song. It was actually Queen, I think the song was "Don't Stop Me Now." See? We can all make mistakes. wink

By the way, it was a great movie, can't wait for it to hit DVD here in the States.
