It is the sum of the whole that makes us admire his genius. Not just our admiration for 20 or so albums. I can only speak for myself here, but I started turning to the bootlegs in the late 90’s for two reasons. The first reason was because they were there and I really wanted to know more and hear more from Prince. The second reason was because his official output was, to be quite blunt, pretty shit. As far as I am concerned, it is the bootlegs COMBINED with the official stuff that has kept me interested in this freak and in my own small way contribute to the success of Musicology. But take away the bootlegs and I would have jumped ship in the late 90’s, bored and fed up with a freak that had lost his touch. And I think I can quite confidently say that if there were no circulating bootlegs at all, Princes fan base would be somewhat smaller than it is now. Maybe Prince should ask himself how successful Musicology would have been without his fan base. He would have never made it through the 90’s without us. The man is seriously confused about the whole issue. My god, there is no doubt in my mind that Prince has used the bootleg market to his own advantage in the past. He cant suddenly turn against it at a whim because he suddenly feels he doesnt need it. And to direct his displeasure at the very people that have helped him struggle through the past ten years is just downright stupid. By turning against the bootleg market, or more specifically his fans that have delved into the bootleg market, he is categorically stating that he only wants us to listen to his official releases. In my opinion, his official releases alone diminish his standing as a true genius, especially over the last decade. And I think that Prince thrives on the perception people have of him. It really doesn’t have anything to do with buying bootlegs or trading them. Go on Kazaa and type in Prince and see what comes up. The majority of it is official stuff. This is very different to bootlegging, this is pirating and is a completely different moral and financial argument altogether. But bootlegs are not for sale, never have been for sale and would otherwise be collecting dust and deteriorating in a vault somewhere. The fact that someone has got hold of them and is now selling/trading them unofficially does nothing except enhance the legacy of the artist. If he doesn’t want them out there to be discussed/traded/sold, then perhaps he should beef up his security and stop leaving stuff lying around to be picked up by a passer by. Regarding the avatars...I would assume HQ had no other option then delete every avatar at once since they had 2 remove every Prince pic at once. It would not be realistic 2 decide on every single avatar if it's allowed or not at the moment right? No idea if this site will be questioned about showing the Prince images, but one would assume that if they do go to court sueing one site then why not others... But what fucked with me the most was how they got all that information on me and who "sold out" (but I probably already know considering Love4OneAnother/NPGonlineLTD/NPGMC...) I don't know what they can do about NG's but probably nothing, same goes for filesharing and P2P software like Bittorrent (which is legal...) BS like this is the #1 reason I have no problem asserting my rights as well when the "club" fucks around with it's customers. This is also the same reason Prince deserves to get sued when his bodyguards steal someones camera... And I have less and less sympathy for his battle with the big bad record companies. Because after all, he signed it away, it's their right to keep it. It's all about ethics, when Prince needs something and the law isn't on his side.
