The Black album...

While out on my shopping spree I bought the Black album then read here that it's rare.... is that true? It's black and says I Own The Black Album in a whit oval. I can't see finding it for 7.99 if it really IS rare...

and why didn't Prince want us to buy it? (Don't buy the black album, I'm sorry)

Sorry if I'm asking "silly" questions...

Thanks in advance!

OKay, first I laughed out loud at your post, but then I realized that maybe you're quite new to Prince's music, looking at your age....So welcome to the .org!

Congratulations with your Black Album purchase, how can you go wrong for only $7.99? If you would have paid that price for that album between 1988 and 1994, it would have been very rare. The BA was supposed to be released then Prince pulled it back because of the 'dark content' and released 'Lovesexy' instead. A few copies allegedly got on the market, I got a boot in 1991, got it on tape in 1989. Later in 1994 Prince decided to finally release it in order to fullfill his obligations to Warner Bros.

So no, it is not that rare.....unless you'd have it on vinyl!

lol I am quite a baby in the "fan club". I've casually liked his music for a long time but only recently have I become THIS interested in where he's been, the how's, why's ect.

For 7.99 I'm perfectly happy with a readily available CD biggrin

I'm currently in hot pursuit of Come, For you, and Dirty mind..... the people at the CD stores around me are on the look out lol

Thank you for the welcome cool I love it here so far!! I've learned A LOT (not so sure about the toilet paper thing but.... lol lol lol )

NEWBIES!!! , GOTTA LOVE EM'. biggrin

Enjoy your discoveries, with some well debated exceptions, Prince has done mostly quality work, and you won't go wrong with anything you buy. I own just about every commercially released album from him, minus some of the downloadable only music from his website.

It sounds like you may have picked up a bootleg copy of the Black Album, so the sound
quality may not be all it should be. A genuine copy (we're talking the officially released
1994 edition here) should be all black apart from some peach writing on the spine, which
should have the catalogue number: CDW 45793.

You have a bootleg alright.

See this thread for places online where you can grab an official 1994 copy:
http://www.prince.org/msg...sg_1942316

The official release looks like this (the 'promo only' stamp at the bottom of the cover (left side) is only on promo versions - but the Black sticker with Peach writing above it is on all official releases):

The ones that have the OVAL sticker are not even the Prince ones. It is the one from the cover band that replayed the black album. I think they were German or French.

So this is not even a bootleg. biggrin

Welcome!

It's always great to help others out on their journey through the Prince musical universe...

I am even jealous for you are able to listen to all of that great music for the very first time. Just you wait until you find out that for every officially released album there are three bootleg albums to compliment it...

Well, if it's got that catalogue number and that info printed down the spine, then it certainly
sounds like a proper official copy (asuming the cd looks like the one in the picture NouveauDance
posted earlier). Interesting, I've not heard of official copies having the oval sticker you describe
before.

Come is in my top five Prince albums. Good hunting!

I thought that WB released it after Prince told them NO and that just fueled more of the fight between the 2. I am probably wrong but that's what I heard.

You did hear incorrectly.

Prince cancelled the original release a meer 7 days before it's projected release, Warners were more than accommodating to this extraordinarily late request - showing the esteem Warners had for Prince.

When Prince got all pissy in '93 and wanted out of his just-inked mega-contract, he wanted to line up as many releases as he could to get out as soon as he could.

Seeing as WB already had the Black album, signed, sealed, delivered, it was an easy way to knock off another notch on his contract.

I don't recall now if it was actually part of the contractual obligation (or a one-off cash thing), there were a few deals purported regarding the Black album, and I remember a great article in Uptown many years back all about it.

It was also on the cards for release in 1991 as part of a 2 album set, inc. a best of, WB were up for releasing a best of after the terrible performance of the Graffiti Bridge project, but again, they were very accommodating to their little Prince, who already had Diamonds & Pearls under-way, and wanted that to be his next release.
