I mean, can he really sing to you? Can you really feel the passion, emotion, and depth within his vocals? Are they soulful to you?


Just a simple question.

Well, now that I think about it...yes, in so far as he writes his own songs (so there's thought behind every line)...there's conviction. But Prince is, for me, primarily a Party/celebratory artist. I'm only here for the funk. Ballads like "Slow love" are non-descript and could be written about anyone. No idiosyncracy whatsoever there. Same deal with "With You". But then we have "If I was your girlfriend" which is a whole lot more realized.

I suppose I'm not really looking for passion when I listen to Prince though. I'm looking for funk. So it's a tough question for me to answer...

Prince's musical inspirations are far and wide. However, underpinning most of his greatest work is 'Soul'. Evidence demonstrating this can be gained from many places;

1) By watching his performance of 'Forever in my Life/It' from the SOTT concert movie. EVERYTHING about this performance is pure soul.

2) By listening to a number of his guitar solo's i.e. 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'still would Stand All Time (small club boot). Too many to mention! everybody has got their own personal favourite that just hits u in the pit of your stomach

3) Listen to the 'The beautiful ones' or 'something in the water (does not compute)'

4) His screams. For me, personally, Prince's screams 'out soul' james Brown's. Whooo controversial!


A prince is SOUL because thats what drives his music.

Well, since I am an atheist myself I'd say that it's bloody unlikely that Prince or any other living individual has a soul. But we'll see the truth about that when we'll all die. As of now, I'll have to answer "no".
