To buy or not to buy ONA?

I really enjoyed seeing Prince live, and as I don't have the money to follow his ass all over the U.S., I wanna know if ONA will substitute for now. I'm wary of buying new Prince because of the radically inconsistant reviews...but the live experience rocked my panties off! Please tell me the strengths and weaknesses of One Nite Alone. Is it worth the price?

its really quite excellent imho
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

For a first live Prince set, it's disappointing, I hardly play it at all. I think the DVD Live at the Aladdin is a better deal (although it should have been the whole show)

Im not sure if its worth the money (since it is really expensive box) but IMO it is really rewarding, although it could have been a lot better. Still, theres so many great tracks. The problem is that since it isnt really a show, but a compilations of different shows, you cant get the FEEL of a real concert. And yes, he could have chosen better performances of some songs.

But yes, you should buy it. But beware that it is really different from the Musicology tour, with lots of Rainbow Children tracks (which is a great thing).

And the 3rd disc Aftershow is good, raw jamming.

I was so excited since when I got it. I never play it anymore. Too piano medley like. Disk 3 is really good...but not good enough to get the whole thing.

Now it's not BAD per se. I have some live boots and I listen to those WAY more.

You should buy it.
The 1st cd & 3rd cds are pretty damn good.
The live versions of TRC songs really fill them out
& the older tunes sound great too.
The 2nd cd has alot of medleys so how you feel
about medleys will effect how you feel about the 2nd cd.
I seldom listen to that 2nd cd since I get tired of the medleys very quickly.

Diffidently u should buy ONA. The box it comes in is beautiful, the book inside is nice and the music is wonderful. I can’t stop playing disc 3 Afterparty It Ain’t Over. U won’t be disappointed… Joy In Repetition is totally masterful. A brilliant song

Its a good buy, although the only flaw in my opinion is the way there are so mant trax blended together in the 2nd cd and not played out fully which i found fucking annoying, but the live jam session cd makes up for it

I actually saw Prince on the NEWS tour. Yes, the meandering jazz flourishes did put me to sleep at times...but overall, the show had the most amazing energy. Prince just blew me away - my fanship increased 1000%. His musical virtuoso, his interaction with the crowd, the unmistakable Prince sound...ecstasy for 3 hours. So how would you rank ONA next to the rest of Prince's more recent releases? I just need to know that it's an inspired, solid release.

I saw Prince in Sydney last year and it was a similarly amazing experience to the one you describe. As for ONA? Go for it! Put the headphones on, turn it up loud, shut out the world and be back at the concert - well that has been my experience. I guess he did do the whole piano medley thing in Sydney, so I have a more personal attachment to it. There are some nice audience interaction moments and as others have said the third CD - the after party and Joy in Repetition - are magic.

Hey Green! Actually I saw Prince in Sydney too..and enjoyed the piano medley heaps. "On the Couch" was just amazing. What a night. I was about to jump on the nearest plane to go see him again. Amazing, amazing.

I think I'll take it. If I'm really not into it, I can always sell it.

... I had to jump on a plane from NZ to see him in Sydney... there's nothing like having to fly international for a weekend! The lengths we will go to see Prince. I have even considered a trip to the US to catch a show on the Musicology tour, but a girl has to hope he will make it downunder again sometime soon.

Anyway... I'm sure you'll get a kick out of ONA - I actually bought mine at the concert (credit card was so far gone by this stage I figured what the hell...). Enjoy!

No 3CDs are worth the price they are charging for. Other than that, it's Prince's live album. Of course it's good.
