Tricky - the song!

How unfunny is this song? or maybe I just don't get it. Can someone explain it to me? lol

Tricky is a part of a series of studio recording where he and often Morris Day would just sit and jam and blurt out the first thing that came up in their heads.

In the booklet of Crystal Ball (the Cloreen Baconskin jam) it is explained as a way of spontaneous song writing that gave us songs like I-bitch and Feel U Up.

Tricky is just a somewhat hyper Prince dissing Morris in a funny way, cuz it is Prince on vocals in this song. You can hear Prince saying that "they" didn't have the time to call in Morris.

Actually, Tricky is CLASSIC PRINCE, as we like to say and the beat you hear on that track is the birthing ground of many a funky Prince song, Soul Psychodelicide (Mothership version) being one of them...

I don't think I ever thought of it till now, but surely Tricky as Time refence has at least some relation, if just a nod, to Tricky in UTCM (Jerome)?

True. Jerome's character was named after the song, I am sure.

I think both Tricky and Cloreen Baconskin are very cool.. nice insight into the "inner workings" smile.

But regarding Tricky..... he says "we ain't gonna put no mo' INSTRUMENTS on this, we ain't got time."

It's "Mo' instra-ments" not "Morris".

And isn't it Morris on the very beginning of the song... talking about "bean pole, snaggly tooth...." and then Prince comes in his Tricky/Morris voice.

All I know is that Morris is on the drums in that recording. Regardless, it's fucking hilarious. I actually discovered this song before I even knew that the Time were a prince side act, I thought Prince was just ripping on Morris Day without knowing they were associated.

Thanks.

And I guess you're doing an Ed Mcmahon/Jonny Carson reference ? I didn't know that's who the Jonny was supposed to be in the song until I saw on DTT that it says the tonight show thmee is playing but I never really heard that part.

smile

But was it in reference to anything else, maybe a nick-name for Jerome or something, before the song and the movie?

that's very interesting about the morris and prince sessions. I love the beat of the song, just think it's not so funny. biggrin It does have that irresistable bitch rawness vibe to it.

thanks again...

I really miss hearing this song. I had it as a single (remember those?!?!) when it came out as a b-side, but I have yet to see it anywhere either online or on another compilation.

Any clues or ideas where to get it?

Thanx
