Awesome Key/Piano Work...

Hey guys,

I'm doing Jazz piano cool and my teacher told me to get some pieces to transcribe and I said "can I do funk cool" and he said yeah, so I've set out to get as many cool Prince Keyboard solos that I can so that I can learn to play them dancing jig

But I'm stuck...

So far I've got East from NEWS.
Can anyone suggest anything else? Gold era stuff would be cool.
And don't suggest Head, that's outta my league.

Thanks for any help you can give smile

I'm a keyboardist too. Funny thing about Prince is that even going back to his first hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover" he was using jazz chords to the hilt. It's so easy to miss and most listeners don't know enough about music to know that. Little Red Corvette uses Jazz chords produced in such a way that they sound pop. As far as solo's? When doves cry is a good one and it's doable by a less accomplished pianist. I've had to learn to play Little Red Corvette on piano, which means changing the guitar solo's to piano solos, it's been worth it, crowd reaction has been great. It all takes time and work though.

DO U Lie has a great jazzy progression! Your teacher sure could come upt with a great jazzy piece based in this song.

I'm a jazz pianist and teacher, and with all due respect, I think there are other things that are more important to listen to... I mean, I love Prince's music and his keyboard playing is really cool, but if you want to learn how to play jazz piano, you really have to find other sources as well. There's nothing wrong with listening to Prince, but that alone is not going to make you a jazz musician.

However, if you want something funky and jazzy that's easy to transcribe, try Levi Seacer's guitar solo on "Sexy MF" (Yes, it works very well on piano, too).
