Is it just me? Or is Prince your favorite guitar player of our generation, too?

Prince played the guitar like nobody's business on the recent Musicology tour.

And it was his playing is what attracted me to his music when I was 16.

In 1990, while attending college for graphic design, I did this drawing as a project... got an "A."

This is where my signature comes from:

Nope, you are not alone....Prince is the best guitarist of our generation...when you think about it, you really aren't hearing anything in music that kicks ass like Prince...Slash maybe, or Lenny, Johnny Lang or Vai but I think Prince is showing that he is a perfectionist when it comes to his music and his geetar!

No he is not.

Ritchie Kotzen, Nuno bettencourt, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert etc.. are all from the 80's and are better than him.

Rockability

Its confusing listening to Prince on guitar, and you might think he is great. He is, but not in skill. Prince is great with sounds and feeling. He was combining gears loaded with tricks since his early days, like backwards riffs. And, the feeling he puts into the guitar, very similar to the way he sings, is outstanding.

Therefore, he is in a lot of ways more enjoyable to listen to on the guitar than Steve Vai. That is, unless you are an avid guitar player and licks and tricks are your life.

Steve Vai should of wished he could play with Prince instead of those solo projects and Zappa stuff.

I've never heard of Ritchie Kotzen, John Petrucci, or Paul Gilbert... Nuno Bettencourt: Great guitarist... better than Prince, no.

And I know you didn't mention Steve Vai. He's not as good he's led everybody to think he is. I caught him in concert back in '95... everything from the way he tried to play his guitar, the style in which he played, the purple outfit he wore, all his mannerisms... He was trying to copy Prince through and through.

Sorry (IN MY OPINION), Steve Vai can't touch Prince. And if these guys were that great, they should still be playing.

I used to draw Prince, almost everyday when I was in high school. Purple Rain was so popular, all my classmates would ask me to draw Prince for them. I do have them all scanned.

I haven't drawn him since '96, and even then I didn't finish it. One day I will do his portrait again.

Thanks to you all for the compliments on the drawing. biggrin

I must admit that i did not like Prince at all until i heard him play guitar live on a video. What put me off was what he looked like mainly. This was around the time before Purple Rain came out. Since then i've been a complete fanatic, about his guitar playing!
The deal with Prince is he has been at the cutting edge of "sound" 4 a long time. Of course I just wanna say we've all got individual opinions, and this is mine, and eye appreciate everyone else's.The guy knows how to control his sound, and is a master of sound production, a perfectionist and control freak. There's no "best", just what is; and Prince is definately gonna whip most people's butt when it come to live playing and personality. He's got playing loud down to a fine art, and i love it smile There's a lot of 'unknown' players who are just as good, but we don't know who they are, coz they're not wanting to be out there! A matter of personality and Luck. peace

I just watched a free concert on Stevie Ray who died in plane crash in the 90's and he was pretty good... I have heard he was the best of our generation.
Any thoughts on this?

i am a great fan of Steve Vai,he is incredible,Paul Gilbert is a good musician 2,but i think Prince plays with more heart and love . When i was 16 i didnt care fore that,i just cared for velocity, speed ,and for sure Steve and Paul are faster then Prince a lot faster, but naw i am 32 and i cant listen a lot of them ,but i can always go for The question of you solo or the ending solo of Anestisia.iI remember the Steve Vai Blue powder solo(Soory if the name isnt corect)that one is a very sentimental beautiful song or the For the love of god very nice 2.
I think people forgot to mention one of the greatest guitarrist i ever heard playing,Bud Guy,he is so good and a Jimmie Hendrix idol 2.I saw him 14 years ago at a concert hear in Rio de Janeiro and never forgot it!
Love and peace,
Mdd.

No, I was serious. I mean, those guys are sooooo overrated. Sure, they're great and talented and can master fret-tapping, yada, yada, yada. But come on now, Prince puts soul and feeling into his playing.

I saw him do some of that souldful playing in "Shhh" during this Musicology live video at his afterparty. It was frickin' AWESOME!!!!!

Well, I don't really have much of an opinion on Steve Vai because I don't really listen to the guy, but I love Jeff Beck. worship

I have seen Prince play live many times though, and when he's on guitar I'm pretty much gone for the night.love I never said he wasn't amazing. I just happen to appreciate Beck as well. But as I said, he's actually not really from my generation. It all depends on, as the thread title states, what/when "our" generation is I suppose.
