Well, Madonna has never had a successful movie or an album that was number 1 for 6 monthes. I'd say back in 1985, Prince was a LOT bigger than Madonna. And today, he has a very successful album(something she hasn't had in a couple of years) and a huge tour. Of course, she got on the bandwagon when she saw Prince making his comeback, and decided to do a "hits" tour herself. What a surprise. Madonna copying someone. We've all heard the hype about how well her tour is doing(at $300.00 a ticket for lip syncing), but we all know she can only sell out venues in really large cities. Madonna could not sell out Raleigh North Carolina, Columbia South Carolina or any other secondary market. Why do you think she's writing children's books now? What happens when music artists can't sell records? They write books or try to act. Prince wins in the end. He has a lot more respect from the industry and right now from the general public.

As far as popularity goes, Prince was way more popular than Madonna in the early 1980s. Madonna passed him in the late 1980s. I think if he had never changed his style after "Purple Rain", she would never have even come close to touching his popularity.

By the way, good comparison! It was very obvious from 1989 till around 1991, that Madonna was following in the early Prince's footsteps with sex and controversy.

From a musical point, Prince IS bigger than Madonna, in the way he's influenced generations of artists and musicians (including Madonna).

But Madonna is bigger in a purely popularity sense. And she's influenced pop culture a lot too. But then, she's always been actively seeking that popularity in a way that Prince never has. Madonna would never deliberately make an experimental, difficult, obtuse album, she always wants something that is gonna be a hit and sell lots. She follows the current trends, Prince goes his own way (mostly).

Well, as much as i like Prince, Madonna has been much more popular than Prince for years! He may have a sold out tour right now...but that's the only thing. In Europe for example, Musicology didn't do well, u never see him on tv and a lot of people i talk to don't even know he still makes records. Sure, MAdonna's latest didn't do that well, but 'Die another day' was huge, Music was huge, Don't tell was huge, and in Holland she sold out 2 huge concert halls, with those ticket prices, Prince wouldn't have....
I'm glad his latest cd was a succes in the US, but i still have doubts with the ticket+cd method... i know it's all 'legal' but it doesn't show that he's popular or not, without this method, the cd would have been down for a long time.... it just says people don't go to the record store to buy the Prince cd.....
But.....is it very important that an artist is popular? I just like Prince to make great music, as he does..... does it really bother he's not in the charts?

Madonna knows how to hype herself thats what she has done for years ...she has two young children: yet kissed two women on stage in front of millions ...to get more headlines more attention .look at her sex book,or all the rumours she fucked her way to the top..Prince has more talent .musically ..i dont think he cares about her being more popular he is a better musician /singer ....Madonna is a media whore who borrows other peoples music and producers to make her albums ..i think Prince prefers his talent to her popularity.
