prince is vastly underated, and he knows it which probably provided alot of the intensity behind the Rock and roll Hall of Fame ferformance. Prince is also more versitile, when he's in a style he's in it, and please dont EVER mention funk guitar without mentioning prince. I have video of James Browns birthday party in 84' when he calls micheal and prince on stage with him. Micheal did a great " mans world" and danced . Prince strutted up to james guitar player and gave the universial "hand me that" signal and took the guys guitar. He took off his shirt and threw down on some gutbucket funk. James was howling.

Jon

Slash for ability and sheer disbelief in how quickly his fingers move...

But Prince, as guitar doesnt feature throughout his work, utilises the guitar better and adds a little more.... er... something to the music....

Prince's guitar playing makes me happy, I enjoy it, and I think it's beautiful and got dammit that's all that matters, is that he's the best to ME.

I too have to give you an A for that drawing, sir. Nice work cool.
When it comes to guitar players, I'm drawn to guys that have a flair for melody. I could care less how fast a guy plays, or how hard he shreds.
Prince is my favorite because of his flair for unique and tasty melodies. He along with Slash, Dean DiLeo, Kirk Hammett and Johnny Greenwood plays the kinds of stuff you find yourself humming afterwards. I eat that stuff up.

uhm, prince aint scurd of none of em. look man i was in the business here in mpls from 90-97 and a fuckin VIP at glam slam during most of those years. I once saw prince call slash out big time when GNR was in town. They were up in VIP raising hell, house lights went down and prince just walked out and ripped into what had to be a 10 minute solo while staring straight at slashes drunk ass. Trust me, slash didnt want none. Prince also routinely used to call claton out when in england. dude, he aint scurd to tangle with none of em.

You know, it's getting to the point where some people are probably AFRAID to post about how much they love Prince's guitar playing, because of motherfuckers like YOU jumping into the thread trying to ruin the good vibe. It's one thing to sincerely share your opinion and discuss it, but some of ya'll think you're slick....you're trying to ruin somebody's good time, that's what you're doing rolleyes

These questions just ask for trouble. First off there are so many intangible things that come into why a guitarist is considered good. Technical skill, composition quality, feel, and soloing are all part of it.

Then add a individual listeners taste and you can fight forever on it.

I will take the bait and say this:

My fav guitarists are Zappa, Prince, Vai, EVH, Randy Rhoads, and Zakk Wylde.

Now all have done great things for the instrument. They are all diff but all very influential.

Prince is a tremendous guitarists who is my fav songwriter of all time, and is extremely effective in rhythm"s and lead soloing, however he will never have the technical prowess of a Steve Vai.

Comparing these musicians is fine however saying one is better is disrespectful to all of them.

Enjoy the music and thank god we acutally still have musicians who "PLAY" their instruments.
Music is the best...

Whoa, whoa, whoa... were all just talking opinions here, come on now.

I've heard many guitarists in my lifetime, and yet none of them have moved me, the way Prince does. That's the main reason I think he's the best... I personally don't get too technical about it, all I know is I get chills at certain times I hear him play.

Very rarely does any other guitarists do that for me.

shhh break it down...

So let's all agree on one thing, everyone is different and has different tastes in music.

that's fine with me! NOthing wrong with that...but MY POINT IS...the point of this thread is to give Prince props for his guitar playing...if you have nothing GOOD to say about his playing, or if you think he's not that good...why bother posting??? And don't tell me cuz this is a discussion board, cuz that's an excuse, plain and simple...rolleyes

"Is it just me? Or is Prince the best guitar player of our generation?"

The only real answer for that is that Prince is your favorite guitarist.

Personally, I prefer others. Define "best". What do YOU mean when you say "best"? (Proficiency? Technique? "Soul"?)

I'm not sure if this is a Prince-praise post or a legit, sincere question. Seems more like a bait-into-praise post. If so, praise on.

Have you even READ anything I've posted above before you went off on me? No, you haven't because you would have seen what my opinion of Prince on guitar is.

Go read it, and THEN you can get back to putting words in my mouth, which you seem to be doing very well already.

yes I changed it. I should've named it that way to being with, cause I didn't mean to start a great debate. A simple "yes" or "no" would've sufficed.

Any debate would've been futile anyway.

No, but he is my favorite all around musican. When taking singing, lyrics, musicanship, creativity, originality, versatility etc.. into consideration. Even tought I agree with Blaqueknight when he says tha guys liek TOny Macalpine is more proficient than Prince, his songs are a pain in the ass to listen, most of the times. HE should keep playign backing tracks for Steve Vai forever.
