How do young folks get turned onto prince?

confused I'm 36, and when my 16 year old daughter came to visit this summer i learned that she was into prince. I was watching ONA DVD when she proclaimed "he's mine now daddy". I was like damn, take all my money, tell me what to do and who to date and now you take my favorite singer. How do people so young get into him, when i was in high school i discovered James Brown and Jimi but is it the same?. She saw him in champaign illinois and now she's hooked. She wants to know more about his past but i didnt want to send her back to her mamma with dirty mind in her suitcase knowhatimean?.

I'm 36 too, and my kids dig him, thanks to being raised on his music by me.

They went to their first Prince concert a couple of weeks ago, Denver 8/28.

They loved it! I think most of the youth discovering him today, is thanks to their parents.

Some young people actually like good music.

But believe me, having a parent that listens to "filthy prince" is not going to help.

My 7yr old , likes Prince music, but doesnt know it yet...

He bops and nods to most of it, but if I ask him if he likes Prince, he says he doesnt...

correction, he says "No, I don't like The Prince"...

So now our Mr. Nelson is known as "The Prince" in my house.. king

I'm 16. Whenever I hear a lot of praise for an artist, I buy a CD, and if I like them I just get hooked, and that's what happened with Prince. Besides, with the stuff MTV is shoving down our throats now? I had to find sometime better to listen to.

well im 18, and when i was younger i remember my sister constantly talking and singin prince...but it was always the staple radio hits...we never had the money 2 go and get albums an stuff but she always talked 2 me about prince, and eventually i got into him quite a bit as well by the age of 12...still never had enuff money 2 invest in some cds...and then came the pop wave and i was sadly distracted by the crap that was being sold....and now, i've finally woken up and finally have money 2 spend 2 buy myself some prince gear....im getting along quite nicely...

so i have my sister 2 thank cuz life would b "pits!" without Prince

I have responded to at least five threads EXACTLY like this one in the past week or so. I don't understand why people think that age has anything to do with anything. Obviously Prince isn't on MTV or the radio as often as he used to be, but younger people still know what's going on. I am thirteen and I love Prince. I can still recognize talent even though I may not be considered to be the "right generation." Can't people just understand that age has nothing to do with taste? neutral Prince is talented and sexy, why wouldn't people, yes, even younger people (*gasp*) be attracted to him and captivated by his music?

yea i'm 16... and just cant get enough of prince. I saw him in milwaukee when he came and was blown away! His guitar mixed with his vocals. AMAZING.... The way he can go from singing a r&b/hiphop song to doing a jazz type number is phenomonal. I always liked his old stuff you know 1999 and little red corvette, but once i saw him in concert i was hooked. i think thats the main selling point... seeing him in concert... once anyone sees him in concert anyone at any age, there hooked. 1st concert i had been to in a long time where everything was actually played by instruments... anyways tahts my 2 cents. im tired and am goin to bed.

peace

I started getting into Prince after stealing a copy of Under The Cherry Moon that my brother used to own I was 14. I loved the songs from the soundtrack as well as the movie. I ended up buying a casstte tape of it,but I've played it out worn it out. I also stolen his copy of Hits 1 cd later on I bought Hits 2 along with the Hits video collection. My teenage years I've listen to Prince alot well I still do at age of 23. I've used to be a cheerleader back in high school and I remember my coach had the team do a Prince remix that included bits of Let's Go Crazy,My name is Prince and Cream.

Prince has the ability to reach all audiences (old, young, black, white, all ethnicities)

When i seen him live, i've never seen such a diverse crowd at a concert ever. It was like the world was united in the stadium. His music and style just do that.

And yes my dad is pretty closed minded to Prince because of his lyrics of sexual nature.

He told me how one time on television a priest was practically begging parents to refrain their kids from seeing Prince because of his vulgarity.

It's been said before and I'll say it again, Prince is for EVERYBODY. When it comes to Prince, some get it when they're younger, others when they are older. I was 5 when i became a fan and I knew there was something about him that was more "adult" in his music than MJ's music (my other favorite at the time) but I understood that and accepted that and I knew that one day, I'd get a Prince album. I finally got one when I was 7 with the Parade album and my collection kept on growing as I kept on growning.
I'm just glad that after all these years, I'm seeing people also in their mid-20's and younger understanding what I understand about Prince, that he's simply the best out there and reading these post put such a big smile on my face.
biggrin

Good music is just good music, regardless of age, race, orientation, size or religion and Prince's music is GOOD music. Thank God for that!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

My 6th grade teacher let me listen to Little Red Corvette & ever since then I have been obsessed w/ Prince. Plus, most of the music from today when its on the radio they have 2 bleep out every other word. Most of the artists my friends like have horrible meanings 2 them.

I'm 24 and I got into Prince back in 1992 when I was 12...I had always heard Prince over the years and liked him but I never liked him enough to invest in his music BUT I was a big fan of "I could never take the place" and "I wish you heaven." BET used to play them 2 vids ALL the time and I can vividly remember seeing them and liking it...."Insatiable" was the song that made me buy Prince's music..plus at that time, Prince was everywhere..GET OFF was a hit,CREAM was a hit, DIAMONDS AND PEARLS was a hit...alll 3 of them were back to back hits so Prince was EVERYWHERE...and when I heard that fool hitting them notes on INSATIABLE...it was ALL OVER

little did I know that was just the beginning

I know what you're talking about. The D&P period was when I decided to become a die-hard fan for Prince and not for MJ. I was 12/13 in 91/92. I had such a fun time with that album. I always looked forward to turning on the radio and hearing Gett Off, Cream, Diamonds and Pearls, Insatiable and Money Don't Matter... Those songs were on all the time in NYC. Man I miss that time.

That's so cool that your teacher hooked you up. Don't worry about not finding out about him earlier. Thank God you discovered him at all and this it the PERFECT time to find him. You're going to discover a lot of stuff believe me. biggrin
