OK. I made some mistakes in my preious posts, and I will now redeem myself. I hadn't watched this for a couple of years so... this is for those of you that have never seen or heard this performance.

Prince does come off as very moody, sometimes he has a big smile, sometimes he looks downright mean, and other times he looks shy and like he wants to get away. I don't think he comes off as rude, more than he does agitated by some of Dick Clark's comments.

January 26, 1980

Dick Clark is asking audience members their age. They answer 20 next week, 21, 15, 18.

DC: Alright. You're all in the general area of age, of this man you're about to meet. The lady we talked to in the last half hour started when she was 3 years old, several years ago this man made, uh, when he was a teenager, a demonstration record... made a couple of them. (clears throat) Hello. And uh, people offered to buy them, to put them out and he said "no." And I said to myself, right away, I am about to meet a madman because everybody wants to do this, why would he turn anybody down? (Prince is ready to perform, standing onstage listening to all of this) you'll find out in a minute. And it certainly paid off, this is a fantastically successful album (holds up the "Prince" Album) ladies and gentleman here's Prince!

"I Wanna Be Your Lover" starts to play. Prince mimics playing the guitar, then puts it to his side when he starts to lip-synch. At the end of the song Prince plays guitar and does a move that completely loosens his guitar strap. Songs ends, his guitar strap is hanging behind his knees, he lifts it up over his shoulder and puts the guitar to his side.

With the crowd cheering, and clapping... the microphone not quite in front of his mouth, Dick Clark starts the interview:

DC: Alright!
DC: How'd
(barely audible, he pulls the mic closer to his mouth after the first word) you learn to do this in Minneapolis?
Prince: Where? (without hearing the 1st word, and misunderstanding the question)
DC: Yeah, I mean this is not the kind of music that comes from Minneapolis Minnesota.
Prince: No (Big smile on Prince's face)
DC: Would you be kind enough sir, to please introduce me to your friend, let's start with the bass player here.
Prince: André Cymone (André is wearing see-through plastic pants)
DC: André... the man who escaped behind Keyboards? (Fink wearing a prison striped outfit)
Prince: Matt Fink
DC: Nice to see you. (Matt nods) Man on drums?
Prince: Bobby Z. (Bobby stands up and takes quick little bow)
DC: And the gentleman over here?
Prince: Dez Dickerson
DC: And lastly on keyboards?
Prince: Gayle Chapman
DC: Hello Dale, nice to have you with us. (Gayle mouths hello. I played this over and over, he mistakenly calls her Dale)
DC: Let's sneak over here a second. I said to something , something about the fact that you made a couple of demonstration records when you were a teenager, you're barely more than that now are you?
Prince: 19 (sly grin on his face cause he knows he's lying)
DC: 19, well you've got another year to go before you graduate. (Prince's smile dissappears, his demanor changes quickly) How many years ago did you, did you make these demos and then have offers on them?
Prince: (gives Dick a little dirty look and holds up 4 fingers)
DC: And why would you turn it down?
Prince: (hesistates) Um... they wouldn't let me produce myself
DC: You were 15 at the time?
Prince: Yeah
DC: What'd they didn't think you'd know what you were doing?
Prince: Don't know
DC: Were you ever dissappointed that you didn't let 'em do that to you?
Prince: (sly grin) No
DC: Did you produce... did somebody tell me you played every instrument on this album, is that correct?
Prince: (his demeanor lightens a little he jokingly says:) Maybe
DC: Naw, that's it, you're very shy, modest. How many instruments do you play?
Prince: Mmm (hesitates, 6 seconds of dead air) Thousands
DC: (pulls mic away from Prince as he's about to answer, looks to the audience) Moments we'll be with you... (realizes Prince's answer) Thousands. No, literally do you play all the instruments?
Prince: Um... Alot
DC: If that is the case then... oh I see, no if you're out traveling you gotta have back up people. (points to the band) Are these people the ones that travel with you?
Prince: (nods yes)
DC: What are your plans for travel?
Prince: Uh, we have a tour coming up, uh... in a few weeks.
DC: We'll look forward to it. We thank you all very much for joining us. What's the name of the next song?
Prince: Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?
DC: Alright, ladies and gentleman this is Prince!

"Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" starts to play. Prince mimics playing the guitar, then puts it to his side when he starts to lip-synch. When Prince gets to the part: "tell me baby, ain't that enough?" He does a little high-step dance, and his guitar falls to the floor. Prince is trying to get Dez's attention, but André walks next to him to "sing" back-up harmonies with Dez.

When the guitar part comes before the 2nd verse, Prince whispers something to Dez (presumeably that his guitar fell off) and Dez nods yes. From this camera angle, it does look like Prince gives Dez a kiss, even though he doesn't, it looks like it. Now, I can understand how someone would mistake that. For whatever reason Prince did not want to pick his guitar up, and Dez fakes the solo.

Nevertheless, whether it was a kiss or not, for Prince to never publicly try to correct this rumor and prove his heterosexuality just adds to the mystery around him. Gay people don't try to prove they are gay so why should straight people try to prove they are straight. It's not an insult either way. This had made Prince number one in book, since the first day I ever saw that performance back in 1980.

I saw it when it originally aired. (Back in the day, getting a Prince fix was tough. I would stay up all hours of the night/early morning to see him on the Midnight Special, or Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. And he never once appeared on Soul Train back then. mad So his being on AB was a big treat!!!)

Anyways, the way I remember it was that he seemed SO shy and SO nervous. When DC asked him a certain question (don't remember what it was) Prince put up four fingers, or so. I didn't get the sense that he was being rude, or a smart ass. It just seemed to me that he was shakin' in his high heel boots. I got the sense that the interview must've been torture for him--poor thing. (I felt your pain, Prince. sad)

Haven't seen that performance in it's entirety in years!

biggrin
