In San Jose, two days after Prince's visit to the VIP room of San Francisco's Loft 11, he was Mr. Man-of-the-People, greeting fans and dancing at Pete Escovedo's Latin & Jazz Club.

One of Escovedo's daughters, Sheila E., used to be a drummer for Prince. The 3-month-old club, alerted days before that he might show up, was ready: Two pool tables were set up, a caterer had been hired (by Prince) and the VIP section had been completely redone by three decorators who travel with the star to make sure his after-party sites are commodious, "just in case he feels like partying,'' club co-manager Zena Escovedo (daughter of Pete, too) told me. Fabric was draped over the walls, doorways, furniture and staircase; candles were brought in, special lighting installed. "Whatever he wants, he pretty much gets,'' said Escovedo.

The club got 20 minutes' notice that he was on the way. The presence of his tour bus in the club parking lot resulted in a wild scene with lines wrapping around the corner. Inside, a dozen or so bodyguards watched over his royal highness as he visited the VIP room and periodically descended the staircase to greet fans and dance.

The club closed at 2 a.m., but Prince wanted more, "so we started the whole party again,'' said Zena. "We were calling our friends at 2 in the morning, telling them, 'Wake up, Prince is here, you've gotta come party with us.' '' The star stayed until about 5 a.m., missing a scheduled flight out. Zena said Prince was particularly taken with the club's new sound system, put in by her father, who is a musician first, club owner second.

P.S.: Thanks to Prince for abandoning the symbol and that "artist known as'' thing, which would have made it infinitely harder to write this item. Oh, and one more thing: Kathi Kamen Goldmark insists that Prince called her before calling me, but when she told him he'd have to rehearse with the authors' band, the Rock Bottom Remainders, he said he'd rather play Scrabble.

I had heard about this. I was throwing the OTHER party in SF...which was also off the hook. Sounds like a wildly packed time.

Well, unfortunately he didn't really mingle, but he definitely let everyone in the club know that he was happy for their support! He came down, waved, and did a couple of dances from afar which was totally cool! The whole band was there (minus John as far as I could tell) and everyone seemed to be in a great mood! Maceo and Greg actually left the VIP area and were dancing on the floor with everyone else! I actually shook Maceo's hand and let me just say this - the guy is probably one of the nicest guys you can imagine! He seemed genuinely happy to meet me as well as everyone else who stopped to chat with him - very, very refreshing...

Overall, it's been a great summer tour with Prince. I was able to see 5 Musicology shows and 1 of the shows at the Fillmore so I feel very satisfied! However, I can't wait for more "Hit-and-Run" style shows in the future!

I ran into Juan Escovedo outside of the HP Pavillion after the Prince concert and he tipped me off, although he told me that Prince would be jamming at the club.

I just heard rumors about it from friends as well as some people on NPGMC. I don't think there was an official announcement or anything (as far as I know) but word just kinda travelled around. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to be there!
