Controversy Censorship?

Ok ive asked this question before but nobody could tell me!

On the hits/b-sides the song Controversy, the part
"Am I black or white, am I straight or gay"

The word "Gay" seems to have been censored, so that you can hear the word if you know it but not clearly if you dont, its only very slight, but there is a definate differnce!

Why is this?

I thought you were making shit up but it does sound a little funny on the Hits. Maybe they just messed while they were remastering. I can't imagaine why they would edit that out when they leave so much on the album in whole.

Yea, kinda strange, but the chances of messing up on this one word?
And this word has all sorts of politically charged connotations.

Someone at the record company not happy with Prince's ambiguous sexuality?

It hasn't been censored for "The Hits/The B-Sides". I have the original 45 and it is the same way on there. "The Hits/The B-Sides" just included the original single version as/is.

The 45 is the one that got the majority of air play back in the day. I don't know if Prince recorded it this way because he thought it was too controversial for radio but the album version got played on the radio every now and then.

Even though the 45 of "Controversy" does not have a non-album B Side, I kept it through the years because it is cut in several places and edited to perfection. I wish I had saved my 45 of "Let's Work".

I'm sorry, apparently I was editing my post at the same time you were making your post. Go back and read my original post.

Yeah, I didn't think that it was censored for the "Hits/B-sides" since "Sexy M.F.'" is an uncensored version.
