And from the same album, no less. So different from each other, but so equally important to making 1999 the watershed it is.

I love both of those songs. That reminds me, many years ago in high school, I dated this girl for a while and nicknamed her "Lady Cab Driver". She wasn't a Prince fan, and had never heard the song. It was cool how she liked the nickname and signed her name in letters to me as "Lady Cab Driver". She just thought the nickname sounded funny and knew it was a Prince song after I finally told her. However, she never listened to it and that made it even more strange.. but cool. wink

Anyway, great tunes. thumbs up!

guitar whistle "Lady....Cab Driver.....can you take me for a ride/Don't know where I'm going cuz I don't know where I've been/So put your foot on the gas and let's drive....."

FUCKING FANTASTIC SONG!!!!! headbang

It embodies everything great about a Prince song: Funk rhythm guitars, distorted lead guitars, synths, sound effects, a sexually-themed narrative, Prince's lead vocals, the girls' background vocals, the DRUM MACHINE!!!!!

biggrin

SOMETHING IN THE WATER is one of my all time favorite Prince songs...I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG ! Hearing it during the Celebration 02 was one of the biggest, maybe THE biggest, most unexpected surprise I ever witnessed during a Prince concert...
And I really like all those different versions of this song, always fascinating how drastically he´s changed the arrangements, for instance, there´s the 14 minute version , very guitar heavy, from the mid eighties, ( which is my favorite one ), then you have the re-recorded piano heavy version , then there´s the ONA version which gives the song a bit of a lighter, mellow twist but it´s still the same song, just interpreted differently...
GREAT GREAT SONG, truly...
One of my all time favorites..
If there´s one song he should revisit again for an officaila recording, then it´s this gem. He doesn´t even have to censor the lyrical content.
This song is so amazing.

Lady Cab Driver is one of his best funk songs. Something in the water would easily make it to my list of Prince's best songs, right up there with Anna Stesia as an eerie psycho-psychedelia masterpiece.

I bet you are really enjoying yourself hearing the "Controversy" album for the first time. I definately remember the old days hearing something new for the first time from "The Old Prince". There's no better listening experience.

something in the water, wow, the drum machine (detuned rim shot) is still very aggressive. i could never work out the low keyboard parts, sounding like a heavy tide coming in and retreating.

the other part that confuses me is when he says 'bitch, you think youre special'. does he drop the microphone at that time or knock it?
