Prince no longer holds back on guitar.

I went to the Utah show , and one thing intrigued me about the performance: Prince, for once didn't hold back on guitar chops. I know, he has always played well, but that concert he really went crazy. He actually played as complex as guitar players in the pantheon of guitar greats, instead of doing heavy metal imitation runs. He really has improved on the Hohner. Instead of just doing funk riffs, he really wailed on that.

Wonder why he finally decided not to hold back? About time.

ps, Renato just plays devastating keys.

Perhaps he feels like he can let go now that he has such a tight band. Remember, he is no longer Michael Jordan leading the way with a bunch of maybes...his band is much tighter than ten years ago.

Maybe because he's got a new CD ready before the year ends--better than Musicology.

I concur. His entire band is awesome now so there is no need to hold back.

I think before for the past two tours, he hasn't had a rhythm guitar player, so now he doesn't need to play the funky guitar riffs, since he's got Mike Scott back. I like it when he takes up the duties, but it takes away from his improvising since someone has to keep up the funky riffs, but its nice to have him get on the guitar when the song calls for ELECTRIC MAN!!

You must a missed a few of the aftershows and past tours. The man has never held back, just playing a little more now. They way he plays now, is how I remember seeing him on the Dirty Mind and Controvery tours. He played his ass off when I performed "head." lol
If U can find it, check out the solo on "If I had a harem" from the Lovesexy tour! razz

Oh Lawd. cool

I would kill for a driving rock album with all new material from the current band. Prince and Blackwell would carry the album with guitar and drums alone.
(Insert something clever here)

Not sure he's ever "held back." Maybe he's found more or renewed inspiration, and it's manifesting in his soloing chops.

Maybe he's taking lessons from a new teacher?

He's old now. If he holds back any longer, he won't be able to lift a guitar.
Hence, he's catching up on lost time.

I have never seen such fine musicianship in my life...I admit I am not a musician myself...but I have never felt the music and energy, before, like I did at the Musicology concert...him and his guitar could have played for the two plus hours....and it would have been enough for me.... nod

Even though I think you currently suck, for your troll-baiting anti-TRC thread, I have to agree with you here. I've loved the different kinds of music he's dared to release, but I think it is time to do what he does best and ROCK (just like he did on the last few songs of The Rainbow Children. You must not have noticed.)!

Luv & Peace,
