Prince's escape through music... ...it seems clear to me that during his childhood, he used music as a primary means of escape in order to exorcise very intense feelings of rejection and isolation resulting from his troubled home life.
Do you believe he still uses this inner-world of losing himself in music as a means of coping with unresolved emotion? Do you believe religion has provided the more logical sanctuary to rest his seeking & troubled spirit? I hear anger, rebellion & a desire for salvation in The Rainbow Children, a cleansing & purification of this anguish in N.E.W.S., and a sense of calm, fun & freedom in Musicology. His spirit seems lighter nowadays. What do you hear & conclude about Prince from these records?

No, it is much simpler than that.
Back in the day, Prince learned how to play, As inevitably he knew it'd get him a lay You'll never know a girl called Nikki and you'll never find Erotic City

Do you believe he still uses this inner-world of losing himself in music as a means of coping with unresolved emotion? [snip] Most definitely. I still don't think we've heard the result of his coming to grips with the deaths of his parents, and his child. And maybe we never will. Sure he's written songs about them but, that doesn't necessarily mean that he resolved any issues he had with those events. And we as fans may never hear anything. For all we know there are many songs that directly relate to these events that are sitting in the vault. Or, he recorded and quickly erased them because they were too personal. Do you believe religion has provided the more logical sanctuary to rest his seeking & troubled spirit?
I think religion his how he's coping with his issues for the moment. And, that's not to say that he's insincere about his new found beliefs. He certainly seems happier and that's a good thing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'd agree that he hasn't used music to pubicly express his feelings about those things most personal to him in recent times e.g. The Rainbow Children, whilst a pretty heavy album, still avoids becoming too "personal" (even if it has managed to offend the majority of the online fanbase ) Like you suggest, Ifsixwuz9, it appears he's using (or has used) the medium of religion in which to find closure.

Why do some of you feel the need to (over-) analyse the man's psyche ??!! , when obviously
everything is based on speculation , since nobody really knows him !!! [Edited 9/13/04 16:44pm]

Why do you get annoyed by it, Dewrede?

Quite simply, analysing an artist's motivations & behaviour helps creates a picture into the actual character making the music. One certainly doesn't need to "know" Prince personally, in order to analyse him well. This kind of discussion is not to everyone's taste, interest or comprehension, but it can be enjoyable and insightful to those willing to engage in it.
Do you have any thoughts/opinions on the original questions, Dewrede?

"What-the window-cleaner-saw" was exactly the allegory I had in mind when I posted that. Glad to see someone so finely in tune with my quaint English ways. Have a drink, sir! . "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person."
