do you think Prince's grammy performance earned him new fans? I can't imagine it didn't I mean...all those Justin/christina/britney-addicts got a taste of what real music sounds like...some of them must have liked the taste, no? It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis! | |

Definitely it did. It was like his '68 Comeback special. It started the whole ball rolling on "Musicology" the comeback, everything.

I don't think it earned him new fans if you mean the kind of fans that come to this site-- the ones that breathe Prince and can't enough of him. I think it earned him a few fickle fans for those few moments he was on the screen. He earned a few new "so called fans" who liked him at that moment just because he did a number with beyonce (yick). I bet thug boys and girls were on the couch saying: "Yuuppppp Prince is down with us now" or something like that and then that was the extent of their fan-dom. "The poets are demanding their pay..."

To this reply I can only truly speak for myself and I consider myself a reformed P fan/supporter. I loved his music from back in the day, however since I was only exposed to what was played on the radio, I was limited in my scope. CD's are not exactly cheap either. Then for a period it seemed as though radio stations were not playing any new P music. What a shame and this is Minneapolis. I can't help but feel as though I am a day late and a dollar short on this whole Prince experience. I live in MN and fairly close to Chanhassen and when I hear about the years of 1998-99 when P jammed all the time at Paisley, I think, "shit, where was I?" Well I will tell u, I was right here attending the U of MN, not too far from the funk, but at that time I was in my own little world and was not in the space to receive the P experience. I even remember going to Paisley in 1999 or early 2000 and seeing him there jam, still was not able to fully appreciate the funk. This year I see him in April in Champaign, IL and I am instantly hooked I see him three other times before the end of the US leg of the tour including twice here in Minne. I don't even get it. All I know now is that I can't get enough of Prince or his music. I am even asking my clients, whom are Minnesota natives about Prince. I hear interesting stories and I love doing my own little digging around for Prince related stories. My biggest concern is that I am too late and can not take advantage of P's jam session that are not associated with a concert. Maybe. Since he did that little ditty with Beyonce. This probably got him younger fans and MUSICOLOGY is getting him younger fans, too. But hopefully once he has them under his spell, he'll go back to doing rockin' songs like Bambi and Let's Go Crazy The Dreaming Peasant

There are only two parts of the USA I like and they are the midwest and the northeast (NEW ENGLAND). Midwest and New England are similar to me, but MIDWEST (esp. Minn) seems to fit with my personality. It's kind of like a waaaaay better Pittsburgh. And Pittsburgh fit my personality, for Pittsburgh is rockish/bluesy/punk/literary all at once. The people I met and meshed well with at college were from MINN.-- so, no, PRINCE is not the ONLY reason i'd want to move there. In fact, I wish I was born there. I feel I have missed a lot and now I am trying 2 catch up with the history of him. I have seen him many times but not enough. Hell, I was at the Lovesexy concert at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, and that memory of him is a little lost, yet everyone seems 2 think that was 1 of his greatest tours. LOL, is it age that has caught up with me or what? You story is touching and continue your journey with P. He has and still is writing the song tract 2 my life |

The first time I saw P was on the Rick James Tour. I was 10 years old. I saw him again on the 1999 Tour. Before this year, the last time I saw P was in 1984 on the Purple Rain Tour. So it had been 20 years since I saw P, but I got a chance to see him 4 times this year..  I lost interest during the Parade era, although I did dig SOTT, but after that, P had fallen off my radar. I also feel that I have missed out on so much. I hate that I missed the Lovesexy Tour that everyone raves about..
I used to post on Wendy Williams message board and around January, someone posted that they had found out that Prince was going to be performing at the Grammys with Beyonce. Of course, most didn't believe it because so many people lie on the internet. Well, lo' and behold, wasn't it a pleasant suprise to see P as the opening act at the Grammys. That performance sparked my interest. I decided to search out info on P on the internet and that's how I found out about the Org. I have a lot of catching up to do, but it's well worth the time..  | |

All the momentum of the US success of the Musicology project was a result of that show.

I guess it did. But more importantly, it showed that Prince and his purple legacy was not over yet. Just when you thought he was forever diminished into pop star obscurity, BOOM, he comes back stronger, cooler, and funkier!!!!!

I didn't live in MN but I also was a fan back in the day, but really couldn't afford CD's without hearing several hits on the CD before buying, (I cried when they stopped producing vinyl cause it was cheaper). Then like this writer said, all of the sudden you didn't hear Prince on the radio anymore. Every now and then a "hit" would get air play but not everybody will like the "hits. For me TMBGITW is nowhere as good as some of this music I am hearing on Emancipation for the first time or the Gold Experience. It was almost like the DJ''s pick the weakest song to push to a "hit" so then you think this song was Prince's best. I feel the same is happening with Musicology. Why Musicology as the lead single??? Where is the Marrying Kind or a Million Days. If you are looking for an urban hit, Dear Mr. Man is a stronger song. Sorry! Ddin't mean to get off track...

I did not like Beyonce tossing her hair around like some air head rock video bimbo. Prince was never about having someone swing their hair around... dance, sing do something but don't just flip your hair around. He earned that comeback. I disagree. I see Prince performing with Beyonce as totally selling out to the young hip hop generation. I also see it as selling out to go along with the theme they had going that night, old school with new school. Prince has always been an individual and a rebel. I respected him much more when he went against EVERYONE else in 1985 and refused to be part of the "We Are The World" video. There's more to being a true artist than doing anything it takes to be successful. Prince has got enough money and hardcore fans to not have to worry about about going along with everyone else. That performance truly disappointed me, especially it being with the likes of someone like Beyonce. He hyped his upcoming tour as being a return to real musicians but yet he performs with the someone that is far from a real musician. If he were going to team up with someone from the show, it should have been George Clinton or Earth, Wind, and Fire. Of course, everyone else on the show was teamed with someone new school. No one new school is worthy enough to perform with ANY of these artists. Andy is a four letter word. | |

I thought that the Grammy performance did everything it was set out to do. Remind folks who forgot about him that he was still around and for those who did know he was here, they needed to be refreshed in the ways of funk. Also for the younger people who didn't know who Prince was before that, I'm glad that he used Beyonce to get the point across that there are people out there making real music. Whether she's a musician or not, she did exactly what she needed to do and she was great and we don't wven have to go there with Prince. So simply, yes, there were new fans out of this and it brought back those who forgot who Prince was.
Thank God for that night in February. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that | |
