The Vault: Worth Buying for A Non Completist Fan? As some of you know I've posted a lot without really introducing myself to this forum and I am a newbie. I am a big prince fan, but not a huge one, and I don't have anything anywhere close to all his music (even all his officially released stuff). BUT I am familiar with a lot of prince history and have seen and compared different lists of the songs he's credited to have written or worked on for other artists and was interested in finding a resource that had the full story behind them. For someone for whom Prince is merely one of his many favorite musicians, ie I'm not a diehard, is it worth buying? | |

In addition to a thorough history of Prince's career, The Vault features:
A complete list of released Prince songs A complete list of released remixed/alternate versions of Prince songs A complete list of released Prince films and promotional videos A complete(?) list of recording sessions and a little info about each song of each session A complete list of released Prince tracks given to other artists A complete list of remixed/alternate versions of released Prince tracks given to other artists A complete list of television appearances and live appearances If that kind of information is of interest to you, then The Vault is worth getting. I find it invaluable myself and have since sold almost all my other Prince-related books/magazines. The Vault really makes them obsolete. . [Edited 9/7/04 14:26pm] | |

If you're just a casual fan, I'd say Per Nilsen's D.M.S.R. or Alex Hahn's Possessed maybe more to your liking.
The Vault is not a biography, it is a really a chronology and a reference material for fans, not a night-time read. DMSR is a great biography, by a respected "Prince-ologist", covering the years of Prince's career upto 1987. Possessed is very much a truncated version of Possessed, but it takes us upto present day (well since it was published a year back or so). Most fans find it to be very salacious, depending on your stance as a fan, that's either fun, or offensive. I say go for DMSR for now  | |

Yup. Just don't expect a coherent album. It's kinda like a continuation of The B-Sides, only jazzier. It's got some great songs, some pretty rare even by bootleg standards. | |

The Vault has a few cool songs on it. I'd put it way down on the list but it is worth owning.
