U Gotta Shake Something - Funky as hell!!! I can't believe it... I only just discovered this superfunky jam today, where have I been!
But that's what I love about Prince I discover something new everyday (yesterday it was Vibrator). U Gotta Shake Something has really blown me away though, all 15 minutes of it. Does anyone here know where and when it was recorded? Maybe I'm just oblivious to these things but I don't think I can recall anyone really mentioning it here, how high is it regarded amongst P fans?

Now you got me wishin' i could find this to check it out. I just stumbled across "Motherless Child" the other day and I feel the same way. Some of that guitar work is fantastic about 5 minutes in. The trouble with all this bootleg material is I'd much rather pay prince a few bucks for a track then waste all night trying to find it on Kazaa. Havin these hits locked in your JW closet is costin' ya kid!! Where can I find "U gotta Shake Something"? Anybody know the origin/history of "Motherless Child"? [Edited 9/3/04 19:46pm]

I've been jamming to this all week. As "The Flesh", Levi is mentioned in the song quite a bit, and Eric Leeds plays on it. I'm guessing circa '87-90. Someone with The Vault could probably narrow it down.
U Gotta Shake Something lyrics (U are listening 2 W.O.O.L., your alternative music station) If U decide 2 get in a key, it's E-flat Grace (Here's the brand new one by The Flesh, "U Gotta Shake Something") 4 love U gotta shake something, what U got 2 lose? Richie Havens did a scortching version of Freedom/Motherless Child at the 1969 Woodstock festival. Motherless Child is a traditional spiritual, author unknown. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Best part of the song, right there!! No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Excellent track.
I'm hoping the rest of The Flesh stuff gets out before I croak it.

Thank you so much for reminding me of this stuff. Don't forget "Get On Up" - I suppose they're meant to be listened to back 2 back.

No they are not. "U Gotta Shake Something" is the only recording from The Flesh sessions that's seen the light of day so far. . "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person."

According to The Vault U Gotta Shake Something was recorded on December 30th 1985 at Sunset Sound.
Eric Leeds says that Prince was drinking wine at the session and was a bit 'looped'. if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron
