Parade TOur- No guitars!

I was listening to this live cd the other day and realized, there is not one guitar solo and Prince doesn't even strum a guitar for one song. He must have been burned out from the Purple rain tour. It was a very funky James Brown style concert, but definitely missing a few guitar based songs with Prince soloing. He did have Miko and Wendy on rhythm, but no solos. I couldn't imagine him ever not playing a guitar for a full concert again.

DMSR, that's one of the few aspects of Parade that's a bit of a downer: not much goin' on in the guitar department (aside from Kiss' solo).

"there is not one guitar solo"

Not exactly...he wails on the song "Purple Rain" in every '86 show he played the song (99.9% of the tour). But yeah, over all he went for the 'old soul revue' vibe.

"there is not one guitar solo"

Not only ended each concert with Purple Rain blazing its guitar solo, also in Head (played at every concert) Prince would pick up a guitar and jam for some time.

True, the Parade tour was not about his guitar playing - so was the album... - instead more about the funk than any show after.

I have the video and he didn't play puple rain on either, the cd i have ended with 1999 (a paris show), and the video with kiss.(june 7 birthday detroit show). What aband though, I really liked the head and controversy versions.

yeah, "purple rain" was cut off on the Paris (as was the original live track for 'Beautiful night') show. Don't if it was performed in Detroit and just not included or what.

Also, prince did not (for the most part) play guitar on 'head' during the Parade tour, as he did on past tours. He might have played on shows, but not for the most part of that tour.

the Parade tour was like Duke Ellington meets James Brown

At the Denver Parade show, Wendy played "Alexa de Paris" and Prince tore up solos in "The Dance Electric", "America" and of course "Purple Rain".

and I saw at 4 different shows (Rotterdam -twice, London, Hamburg) that during Head Prince would play a guitar jam and on several boots of other shows of the Parade Tour has that same guitar jam...

It is only a minute or so near the end of the song, and indeed not like in 1980/1981 when he would get raw on the guitar in Head.

But still I think it is safe to state that in the Parade show Prince played guitar in every show in the song Head.

I totally agree, I,ve got a video of him playing America, taken from this tour, and its one of the best guitar solo's I've seen him do.

Roverlo,
totally agree with all your points. not a big deal, but just saying Prince didn't play guitar on Head in every show, saw him twice on US tour plus boots (Paris, 1st Ave) show this.

Didn't mean to imply that he didn't play it all, thanks for correcting that impression. Just meant the original post made a distinction between strumming vs guitar based/solo.

But, yeah you right with the funkiness of that tour and he did play guitar on PR and Head
