In other words, something that's very obvious to one person, might not be obvious at all to someone else, depending on knowledge, experience or simply just opinion. Of course, your definition mostly just refers to earlier definitions - "jazz music" is music played by jazz musicians, and "jazz musicians" are musicians who play jazz... But I see what you mean, maybe that's the best we can do. I was kinda hoping you would go into musical detail, 'cause then you'd really be in trouble...

And another thing: Now we're talking about it from the listener's point of view, how you perceive the music. To make a definition, I think it's also necessary to look at it from the performer's point of view. If you're a jazz musician, what is your approach and attitude, compared to musicians in other genres?
I'm a musician and a teacher myself, and I find that the more I develop and grow musically, I become less and less interested in what you do and how you do it - and more interested in why.

I am not a musician ... but I loved Jazz before I loved Prince .
I think Prince's Jazz is "ordinary" I did love "Xpedition" the last track in Xpectation... it was Jazz with a real Prince vibe I hope he does more like that. A Bubble Bath with UR Pants On is Better Than No Bubble Bath at All
