The music transcriptions songbooks for the albums from Purple Rain through to The Gold Experience (but not The Black Album) are, I suspect, most likely to turn up on internet auction sites.

I'm sorry, but even if you would find some kind of transcription, you would probably be disappointed. Prince's music contains so many elements that just can't be transformed to sheet music. I've seen some of the published books, and what you get is basically just the chord changes and the melody, which in many cases is only about half of the actual song, in terms of musical information.

In other words, if you go to the piano with the sheet music for "My name is Prince" (which does exist, I've seen it), it's probably not going to sound like the record...

That's fair enough, but it was ever thus.

I own scores for all of Beethoven's completed symphonies and I'll never manage to reproduce them the way that Beethoven intended.

By the same token, I can bash out 'Starfish and Coffee' on both piano and guitar to my heart's content (with the door firmly closed), and equally I've no intention of trying to recreate 'My name Is Prince' even with or without the songbook.

Hell I'd be frightened of even singing it in the shower in case Tony M's spirit suddenly returned.
