Can someone tell me the history/story behind the microphone shaped like a gun?

Someone once said that it was Prince's representation of hip-hop. Hell, he does use it on the Musicology tour. I thought he stop using explicit lyrics.

dunno, he apparently used to use a fake gun on the Controversy tour as a prop and on the Lovesexy tour he performed bob george and held a regular Microphone like a gun on that. plus the whole godfather III vs Barbarella thing in '91. I guess it was just an extension of those things.

I thought it was a bit weird to see him use it @ the RRHOF performance considering his religious leanings these days. Each to their own, i personally hate it myself.

Actually, Gooey's link has my quasi-feminist/Lacanian deconstruction ("wha'?") of the symbolism behind the gun mic (to be taken with a pinch of salt....), but for sheer deadpan, you could do no better than langebleu's response to the interesting and complex questions which the gun mic seems to pose, on this thread.

well i know i remember seeing it for the first time right when that "lovesign" song came out with him and nona gaye. I know i've seen pictures of him with it even before that time period, but i always thought that the gun mic was meant as a message telling people to put down the guns. But hey i could be wrong...
