So ... the hardest workin' man in showbizniss : JAMES BROWN is that why you got james in your avie as you post your opinion on a "PRINCE" site.... James Is the GODFATHER of SOUL but P IS the FUNKIEST MAN ON EARTH and if it wasn't for him GEORGE CLINTONS career may have never made a comeback ..... remember the 100 some odd thousand dollar tax debt P paid off. James was busy taking the cops on a high speed chase gettin thrown in the slammer.... To Sir, with Love

Strange ... because I don't think any artist is better than another. But JB and George had to work harder to get there! When Prince years and years later was ready to play they allready openend doors for him. Period. It was a totally different era... I know what Prince did for George, but do you know what George did by himself? He got his own funk, like JB who has got his own ingredients of his own funk. You can say what you want but they are pretty much the inventors of funk. Congrats on you being a Pro Prince. (whatever that means..) But you need to catch up on your history of the FUNK....

JB and George had to work harder???? Prince just magically had tunes handed to him right? c'mon now Prince did by himself in the studio what the JB's did for James and PFUNK as a whole group did for George not to name a few more super groups like J5, Sly, and then some. They all learned from one another Prince being the youngster and absorbing their styles . Yes the layed down the foundation and invented the funk but Prince has mastered it and carrys it on. You wont catch James or George doin covers of Prince in concert (with the acception of Erotic City PFUNK) but he will do their music at a drop of a dime anytime. In a nutshell maybe Prince was in the right frame of mind to accomplish so much more than all of them in a sober state of mind that he chose because in the long run most everyone mentioned here on this thread in one way or another hit the bottle, got lost dope or made a wrong career move which makes none of them as hard of a working man as Prince in showbusiness. Prince is faring a lot better than most entertainers at 46. But James had a better comeback with Living in America at the age of 50. It ain't quite safe to say that Prince is the hardest working yet when he still hasn't released nearly as many albums as James has.

Some of you missed the "tense" of the question:
James Brown WAS the hardest working man in show-biz, but Prince IS the hardest working man in show-biz and has been now for some years.

You can say what you want but they are pretty much the inventors of funk. Congrats on you being a Pro Prince. (whatever that means..) But you need to catch up on your history of the FUNK.... James Brown is an exceptional artist. Back in the mid-1950s he had to work his way up like almost no other, often playing 3-6 shows a day (!), 350 days a year, traveling in an old stationwagon from city to city, bar to bar, bowling joing to bowling joint (entering the venues through the backdoor, often fucked over by promoters). Even way into the 1970s, James was performing three shows a day, 300 days a year. In between, he would record more than 150 albums and release more than 300 singles. Prince had it pretty easy, jamming in some school bands, scoring a record deal with WB at age 20. Almost from the very beginning of his professional recording Prince had everything made easy for him, all he had to do was create. And I totally disagree with PEJ. Prince is by far not the funkiest musician. Prince can be funky, yes... but he`s a pop-artist. He never got as funky as JB, even though he tried hard at times.

So ... the hardest workin' man in showbizniss : JAMES BROWN huh???? what???? that was a joke, right? No, quite serious. Before you make fun of JB, study him more. This man`s working credentials and discipline for more than 25 years can`t be beaten by anybody. Maybe by John Coltrane. Even today, at age 74, JB plays about 100 shows or more each year. He rehearses the band for about 2-3 hs before the concert, adding to about 5-6 hours on stage every day. Let`s see where Prince will be when he`s 74.

Prince is 46. When James was 46, he had just released "Get up offa that thang". He was still the most important black artist in the music business. He had a solid career going since 26 years. He had played more shows than Prince, he had a much higher recording ouput (4 times higher). He never had a commercial break, like Prince, who had vanished from the charts for about 10 years. JB was always a hot artist, all the way through from 1956 ("Please, please, please") until about 1977. Then he had a major comeback with "Living in America" in 1985, which went Number 1, something Prince didn`t achieve since 1994. Up to this day, James is recording (though he lacks creativity today) and still playing all over the world. How did Prince possibly surpass James?

Over a 39 year period, James Brown amassed an amazing total of 98 entries on Billboard's top 40 R&B Singles Charts, a record unsurpassed by any other artist. Seventeen of them reached number one, a feat topped only by Stevie Wonder and Louis Jordan, and equaled only by Aretha Franklin.

Even though I love "P" we have to look at it in the scope of some of the other posters here.
JB IS the hardest working man in show buisness and will die with that title. Sure "P" is a workaholic but in HIS own right...of course my opion only. If I can say that Prince at 46 and JB at 74 are about equal in shows in this day only...when it comes to shows and musical feats "P" has some catching up to do. No diss at all but really the truth. *********************************************
I'll believe it when I see it
