Emancipation

Just got this CD set for $9.99 and was worried that I wouldn't like it. I have heard bad things about it from this site and years before from music critics.

WHASSSUP??? I really dig the 2nd CD. I am stuck on it, haven't even heard the 3rd one yet becuase I keep replaying #2.
I love sex in the summer. Nice easy jam. love soul sanctuary, love Let's make a baby, there is a couple of others, I went to be listening to it and thought as I was drifting off to sleep, "THIS IS PRINCE???" His style was kind of smooth laid back, just the kind of stuff I was playing during this time. (Brownstone, etc)

I got to see him and apologize to him for deserting him thru the lean years... they really weren't lean on good music. He is the best, has always been the best. bow

I still think Emancipation has some of his best 90's material on it!

He was on a high about his marriage, and looking forward to being a father, and that comes across (shame how it turned out - sad) Plus, his whole trip was about "writing in total freedom", and I think he really tried to stretch himself, especially on Disc 2. I can't think of too many songs in his catalogue from before or after that sound like Let's Have A Baby, Curious Child, etc. Not all of it comes off, but it's still nice to hear him try - rather than just playing it safe. And how can anyone not love One Kiss At A Time, In This Bed Eye Scream, Sleep Around, etc

Disc 3 is good too (when you finally reach it!) - New World, Face Down, My Computer, The Love We Make.

Sure, it was overlong and there's a fair bit of filler. But who else would even think of doing a 36 song album??? And I like that you can listen to it, and then burn yourself a really killer CD of all the best bits!
biggrin

Personally, I LOVED Emancipation when it first came out, I played it constantly, especially disk two. Man, that disc gave me so many friggin eargasms it ain't funny. I still think that it's his best 90's work AFTER the incomparable THE GOLD EXPERIENCE and one of my personal faves that everyone on here seems to hate, Grafitti Bridge. TGE was the best from that decade though IMHO.

People always hate on his 90s stuff. I don't get why, cuz I dug it all. That's when I was at the height of my "fandom" with him and discovering all his older 80s material.

Emancipation was a better set of cd's than Crystal Ball, even with "The Truth" added on. Was it better than Sign o' The Times? It's hard to say, I haven't listened to the complete album in a while... sad . A better album than 1999 {It was intended for a double album I believe} eek No. I think that if the album was released sooner, it would have done better than musicology, and would have helped him more than writing slave on his cheek....but to each his own I guess. Anyway, I actually dig most of the songs. I like "Sex In The Summer", "Curious Child" - which to alot of people I know who probably would never even know who Prince was if they didn't know me, like this song. I like it because it conveys the feelings of a fantasy to me. I like "The Human Body" - I actually think this was better than alot of his tries on faster tempo/Techno Music, which is why I was excited when I heard eek that there was supposedly gonna be an album out with that style of music, but of course that never did come... mad . I'm glad you got the album and enjoy I know I still do. cool

Emancipation has some of Prince's best songs,in my opinion. Friend,Lover,Sister,Mother/Wife,The Holy River,Somebody's Somebody,Betcha By Golly Wow,and In This Bed I Scream are all great songs.

EDIT:After listening to it, I must also add Soul Sanctuary to this list! smile
