Prince... Rap.. Why?

When it seemed that Prince was trying to slip his or someone else's corny brand of rap into his albums, do you think anyone from his Inner Circle finally found the balls and stepped up to him to tell him cheesy it sounded?

Or did he figure it out on his own?

I'm glad this phase has passed...(or so it seems)..

I'm betting he figured it out on his own, unless he's saving his rap tracks for Crystal Ball II. When has Prince ever listened to what somebody else had to say if it didn't appeal to him?

I think a good majority of Prince fans who don't like his rapping don't like rap to begin with.

I'll be the 1st to admit that I am not a huge fan of Tony, Scrap, and whomever else. However, contrary to popular belief, rap has been done successfully in Prince's music.... Gett Off, Pussy Control, Face Down, etc.

But I really, really quite like Face Down.....

I must confess I really love Rap music ... and actually I never felt bad about Prince's raps. I think it sounded sexy ... like on Sexy M.F. or RACE. No matter if it was parody or something else ... to me it sounded sexy.

His rap is fine. Tell me you dislike Pussy Control, ICP&C, Gett Off, My Name is Prince, Face Down..... When people say that he cant rap, they are trying to appear more musically aware than everyone else. Claiming that his rap is lackluster isnt enlightening, its uninformed to all of the forms of rap.

I agree...it seems like some of these fans have a fit when you equate rap music to Prince. I don't know why, he was exposed to it back in the day in MPLS if you know anything about him..you can't expect to like everything that he does. Some of these fans seem to be terrified eek if he sings any rap at all. I've heard many "rock" artists throw a little rap in their songs, so what's the big deal if Prince added some rap to his past songs? I think some of you are afraid that he sounds "too black" ior moving away from the "rock" sound f he sings rap at all..(as a matter of fact I love when he says "my name is Prince". On another note, his musicology tour sound is basically, a Soul/Jazz/Funk and a little bit of rock. Now I don't care too much for some of his "rock" sounding songs but I am a fan and embrace the different forms of music he puts out there and love the musicology concert...so folks...have an open mind.... smile smile smile

Lest we forget that he had a hip-hop dark rapish sound well before most folks knew what rap was. Go back and listen to Bob George from the Black Album. If it would have released when it was supposed to, then it would have been very ground-breaking to rap artists.

In response to Prince doing rap sounding too black,,, I've been Black for the last 34yrs... I also have been listening to rap since '78-'79? when I got my first rap record "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang...Oh yeah, I'm all about Ol' School (in rap, Prince, and general R&B).. I'm just not a big fan of his rap style..

But I must admit that I really do like Face Down a lot.. and I sing along with all his rap stuff anyway.. I can't help it..

Maybe I am wrong, but like many people I view Prince's rap oriented tracks (particularly in the early '90s) as a rather desperate, and obvious, attempt at cashing in on rap's popularity. I do like a few of his rap tracks but many of them are pretty bad. And how could anyone believe that Tony M. was talented? Maybe if Prince worked with some quality rap artists he would do much better with rap? To me it seemed like he was trading innovation for imitation. Many fans, myself included, believe that Prince's '90-'92 releases could have been much better. Rap was a big part of the "problem" with that era.

Prince experiment with different genres and to show sides of him we didn't know he possessed.

For example, He wraps becuase he's so "street" and all--we just don't know it.
He's the type of person make the club get crunk.
