Call my name: hit with the teens

My daughter was telling that Call my name is such a huge hit with her friends at school. She said that when they are on the bus and the song comes on the radio...the kids get quiet and all sing it.

WTF.....you neva know huh? eek

A lot of peeps who havent really been following Prince lately love that song, it's the truth. It's an ok song to me, I think if it would've received the proper support from radio it couldve been a top ten single easily.

It's true. I have heard young teens singing it and turning up the radios when it comes on! I was surprised and not surprised at the same time.

I've certainly never heard anyone in The Bronx play that shit-track. Actually, I've never heard anyone, anywhere play it.

Why do the fans diss musicology so much. The song is listenable. I love the line "Land of the free? Somebody lied. They can bug my phone and peep around my home they'll only find you and me making love inside" That's great and is reason enough to like it

You think that's weird. How about this. This weekend I was in a punk/rock type venue, watching a friend of a friend's band. One band did their set (which included these songs: The Leprechaun War, Satan on the Beach, and Full Blown A.I.D.S. -kinda Dead Presidents meets Sex Pistols vibe, if anyone is familiar), and after this band was done, what do I hear but the opening to Musicology. I was like WTF!! eek Then the DJ played ICPC, he fast forwarded the next two songs and stopped on Call My Name. He then played the whole song in this weird punky/rocky venue. I looked around to see how people were responding, because I thought it was an odd choice given the vibe in the place. Well, there were people singing and dancing along. Then one girl (who is also a friend of my friend, and knows of my affinity for Prince) leaned over and said to me "I love this song. It is badass!!" I damn near fell out of my chair. I was half expecting people to boo. Some just ignored it, but a good number seemed to really enjoy Call My Name. (This song is nowhere near a favorite of mine-I just like it okay, but I want OTHERS to like it because it's Prince and it's always good for him to win/win back some fans.) I was very surprised and impressed. So, it's no great reach for me to believe that teenagers would enjoy this.

Cream brought Prince a lot fans too, I regard that as one of his most dire tracks.

The masses are tired little pigs, they will dig their faces in any trough - but amongst those piglets, there are sometimes 1 or 2 little piggies who turn into something more.

I'm 15 years old. 'Call my name' must be somewhat popular, I hear it coming from cars of 20-something year olds while I'm walking around in Staten Island and Brooklyn. I like 'Call my Name', although it isn't my one of my favorites on the album, it's a nice ballad, I don't hate it or anything. But nobody that I know that is around my age likes this song, or cares about Prince or his music at all. It's sad but most (not all) teens don't listen to anything MTV unless spoon feeds it to them. neutral

Dude, Call My Name is heavily influenced by black gospel and it is a huge hit in the black community, sista's love that song. Just because you don't like music with black gospel influence don't knock it....I am absolutely positive I could not tolerate what you listen to and I am assuming with that title and avatar it is probably heavy metal I would say if thats what you like then cool....

Call my name sounds incredibly formulaic.

There are momments that Prince can really convey emotion (The One, When 2 R In Love, Shhh!!, Beautiful Ones), then there are momments where it just sounds so forced and insincere--like he's going through the motions (This One, Call My Name, Arms of Orion).

He's so brilliant and so talented, why resort to being formulaic?

I agree with this assessment totally AB. This is why "Call My Name" doesn't do it for me as much as a song like "Eye Love U But...," does. The latter just seems to have much more....I don't know... feeling/emotion .....or something.

CMN has its moments(chorus), but it pales in comparison even to songs like The Dance.
Cinnamon Girl and A Million Days are the only hopes for a crossw-over hit. Just like on Rave so far, so pleased was the only hope for a hit.
(Insert something clever here)

I hear that.

I'd add Insatiable to that list too, by that point he'd got the formula down to a T.

It seems like he has a check list for albums - "Hmmm, dance song, check, funk song, check, crooner ballad by numbers, hmmm, don't have one, but it won't take long, Mani, pencil me on Wednesday afternoon to record that, won't take more than a couple of hours and then we can go ice-skating"

A friend of mine, in his early 30's, who has never heard much Prince other than the typical radio stuff says to me...."What's up with that new Slammin' Prince track, Call My Name? If that is what his other stuff is like I 've been missing out?"

and I just said..."yeah, that is hot and yeah, you have been missing out!"

I'll be giving him one of my five Musicology discs when I see him this weekend.
