American Bandstand Performance A co-worker and I were talking and the infamous 1980? American Bandstand perfomance came up.. now correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Prince and Dez do a quick little smooch at some point during that performance?....
I might be crazy..(well , I am a li'l loopy).. but I'm pretty sure that's what I saw.. Keep in mind that I haven't seen it in about 20years. "..Just close your eyes and count to 10...and when U open 'em I'll B standing naked with nuthin' but a SMILE on.."

nope, 'twasn't a smooch--he must've been tellin dez that he'd have to do that geetar solo at the end of "wywtmsb?" since his guitar had fallen off.

I don't recall seeing the performance back when he did it. If I did, I have not seen it since, but I ran across some screen caps on http://www.moonbeamlevels.com and he was so cute.
Here are a few: There are a few more from that performance over there. Shouts out to moonbeamlevels.com [This message was edited Sat Aug 21 8:04:18 2004 by PurpleCharm]

They were miming the instruments, I'm pretty sure. I never got why people continue to mime after the music stops. He was so friggin shy I guess.

I've noticed that before also. As a matter of fact, I noticed it when it originally aired in 1980. I had heard Prince on the radio but had never seen him. This performance was the first time I ever saw him.
I was in the 7th grade at the time and had been called names like "queer" and "faggott" for years. Of course, I didn't know what those words meant so I asked my mother. Now you know, a mother is not going to give you a straight answer about things of a sexual nature so she just told me they meant a "sissy" or a feminine male. I knew I was not the most masculine thing in the world but I had seen other feminine males and they were into weak stuff like opera, ballet, or classical music. This sure as hell was not me. When I saw Prince on American Bandstand with his feminine appearance, I immediately paid close attention. I admired everything about him....his hair, his clothes, his gestures, and his hoop earring in his right ear. I recognized immediately the characteristics that many people consider as a "sissy", "faggott", or "queer" but with one big exception.....this was nothing "weak" at all about his music. He performed "I Wanna Be Your Lover" then Dick Clark "attempted" to interview him. Prince had his hand on his hip and very femininely pointed to his band members as he introduced them. The band didn't look feminine at all, especially Dez. Dez looked like he would cut you up for looking at him the wrong way. Then Prince performed "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad". This was kick ass hard rock coming from this feminine man. It was the total opposite of the weak stereotypes that people place on "sissies", "faggotts", or "queers". I didn't know what Prince's sexuality was and didn't care but I got the perception that he was far from weak and you would regret it if you messed with him. That's what got me hooked to him and what has made me stick with him all these years throughout the style change with "Around The World In A Day" and bringing in hip hop into some of his music. Any other artist, I would have jumped ship. When VH1 aired the show in the 1990s, I recorded it. I have rewinded that part over and over and it is very hard to tell if it is a little kiss, but it does look like it though. Andy is a four letter word.

Dez said it was Prince's plan that the band not say one word to Dick Clark -- Dez didn't quite like the idea but went along with it. That's probably why Dez looks so mean and Prince has that two-snaps-around-the-world attitude. Here they were on American Bandstand and they're gonna act like jerks! But they were doing a lot of things back then to "shock" people and make them take notice, or at least talk about this strange new band. Controversy = publicity.
