Success of the Musicology Tour - Just How Did Prince Do It?

I really am finding it hard to believe the number of people going to see this tour. I saw Prince in Philly a few years ago, and the Wachovia Center was less than 3/4 full, then saw a small theatre and club show in following years. Now he's playin' three nights at The Big House, without a hit single!

It's not as if he announced a full blown farewell tour either, as I doubt people are really shellin' out $75.00 because they want to hear Take Me With You for the last time.

I guess the stars have finally lined up again. (That, plus word of mouth that it's that good...) You've got to hand it to Prince, though. Even the Musicology CD bundling thing wouldn't have made much of an impact on a previous tour. He's done a masterful job of marketing, FOR A CHANGE!

I also think he's finally genuinely enjoying success again - it shows during the Musicology stops I've seen, and I think he's shown an ability to play the game, and not reluctantly so.

Whatever the reason, being in D.C. last weekend was a great party, but I kept lookin' around all night thinkin', "Great, but where the hell ya'll been?" wink

I think the tour itself has been promoted wonderfully. In addition to that, the shows are just stellar. The way P is killin' 'em every night on this tour, word of mouth goes a long way.

TurnItUp

It's called timing. That concert a few years back that was almost empty that wasn't his time. Neither was the late 90's up to last year. 2004 was meant to be his year. This is his time again. Imagine if P and MJ would have been inducted into the Hall of Fame the same year. When MJ had his time, it was hardly in the news, with Prince it was all buzz.

I am very happy for him enjoy your success.

i just think the man finally sat down (or was sat down) and thought things through with some preparation and a lot of advice. this tour and all the media hype wasn't planned out by the dude who wanted a camel at four in the morning, heh. it just shows what he and his people can do when they really put some effort and thought into it. it doesn't hurt that he's obscenely talented and captivating, either.

I think that there is very right on. I know quite a few who are going just from the PHENOMINAL reviews he has gotten.

It did not hurt that he was inducted to R&R nor that he was on the Grammys. I gotta agree that someone sat the boy down and said "Look you..."

I have to remind myself that Prince, though has made some choices over the years that have hurt him, he's not stupid and probably has many people who KNOW like we do what it would probably take to get him successful again.

I am certain he knows that there is a wide base for unreleased and live stuff for the fans and that he could make lots of money...but he chooses not to for his own reasons.

I think the Musicology Tour is doing so well because Prince is saying this is the last time he will perform the old songs. This is bringing all the old fans out.
