PURPLE RAIN S.E. DVD REVIEW

i'll presume u have all seen the movie so i won't dwell on that, except the movie is now presented for the 1st time in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and with a new anamorphic transfer and a dolby digital 5.1 soundtrack (un4tunately no DTS). the previous releases by WB were either a non anamorphic widescreen PAL version (the new dvd wrongly claims it's a 1st time widescreen release) or an academy ratio (fullscreen) cropped NTSC version, both on single layer DVD5's. 4 the reissues they have used dual layer DVD9's, but there isn't a greatly higher bitrate used 4 the picture, altho being anamorphic, it's a lot better than all previous versions

on2 disc 2, the bonus material, there is a 12min documentary on 1st avenue, which is anamorphic widescreen along with the other documentaries, the old footage and videos is 4tunately in the original full frame academy ratio, so no cropping. as with the rest of the documentaries, the main participants are jam and lewis, bobby z, dr fink, wendy and lisa, and jill jones, robert cavello and albert magnoli and alan leeds. the 1st documentary gives a short and interesting history of the club and the mpls music scene leading up 2 1984

nextup is a 26 min documentary on the making of the movie itself with a lot of interesting input from cavalo and magnoli and the band. there aren't any major new insights that haven't been heard b4, but it's interesting none the less

next is a short 10 min doc on the fashions (if thats what u want 2 call them) of the era, with marie france costume designer talking about the styles, and lisa commenting on how risque some of the outfits were even 4 the time

a major draw 4 many fans is the inclusion of the purple rain mtv premier party, 28 mins long, has about 30 seconds of footage of prince entering the theatre, short interviews with wendy and lisa and sheila e, and other small interviews with eddie murphy, lionel richie, weird al, john cougar mellencamp, and some clips from the movie and the doves cry promo. no live performance from prince. it's a shame the UTCM premier party isn't on that dvd as it's unlikely that will receive a SE DVD

finally, there r the videos 4 sex shooter (worth the price of the 4 this alone!), the bird, jungle love, let's go crazy, take me with u (live), when dove's cry, i would die 4 u/baby i'm a star (live), and purple rain

everything is in as good a picture and sound quality that u could reasonable want 4, DTS would've been nice, but it's not really essential

un4tunately no outtakes or input from prince, so hopefully 1 day the special edition is superceded by an ULTIMATE EDITION
