Revisiting The Sacrifice of Victor movie -- got-DAYUMN thass hot shit!!! I just got a really clean DVD copy of this (about damn time, too!!!) and I'm watching it for the first time right now. Well, I mean I've seen this before - back when it was on BET, and then I had various shitty video dubs of it pass through my hands over the years, but I've never been able to hook it up to my stereo and pump the fuckin' volume like this.
This performance just goes to show that he can play songs outside of his regular popular repertoire and give up the stage to other talented musicians, and direct the band, and play guitar, and sing, and smile, and interact with the crowd.....I fucking love that shit.

Aw c'mon, Mavis is shit-hot on Undertaker. It's funny, when I first watched it on BET 10 years ago, I was disappointed that he gave up the mic to her for so long - not that she was bad, but I wanted Prince. But he's right there, playing guitar, singing back-up, beaming smiles, and Mavis can SANG - she makes me feel good deep down inside.

Ok. Just watched it last night and a few things struck me:
Mavis Staples can't sing or correctly pronounce the word 'Undertaker' (Hundertaker?). Prince goes nuts on Peach and it's great. The Steeles are not cool. Mavis ruins her songs. The Ride is nice. | |
