I work at a supermarket with mostly kids my age (I'm 17 going on 18, so its mostly 15-22) and they give me shit ALL the time about being a Prince fan. Even the kids at high school too. All I hear all the time is "Prince is a fag" or "he wears heels", etc...stupid stuff. Then the older people at work look at me like I'm crazy because Prince is before my time, but I don't care, just because I'm young doesn't mean I don't appreciate good music. I just came back from the concert at the Fleetcenter in Boston ALONE because none of my friends would go with me (can you believe that?!?!), but I wanted to go so bad I didn't even care I was going alone. I cant possibly imagine why people laugh at other people for liking Prince, because it doesn't make sense laughing at someone who's a fan of one of the most talented musicians in history, but that's them.

Same here, they all say I'm nuts 4 always listening 2 Prince ( with headphones on) and having not 1 but 3 symbols on my car. Oh yeah, my locker has several pics of Prince in it.

Many rivetheads actually like Prince too. Prince has been a very influential character in the development of electro-industrial music - you can tell him that.

And tell him to get rid of that mohawk. If he wants to be taken seriously in the industrial circles that is. smile

i usually tell them they have no good taste in music and argue with them for 10 minutes about why they should listen to Prince. As silly as it sounds....

Most of the time, they have not even took the chance to listen to him, i hate when people make up their minds without even giving the lil sexy man a chance.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I've never had any problems with co-workers. I was telling one co-worker about the concert and how big a fan I am and she was surprised how animated I was. She told me she would never have guessed this about me.
Of course, it helps that I'm a large, angry black man.

I had co-workers laugh at me for liking Prince but most of them respect the man especially after I explain why i've been a fan as long as i've been. In fact, i took one of my co-workers to see Prince in L.A. and he thought it was awesome. He even danced a little and he never does that.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I don't think that any of my co workers hate Prince but they all think I'm crazy. I get teased every day for going to all 5 shows he did here in MI in June and July. One of my co workers has even started calling me Princella. I don't mind tho. I've begun to convert a couple of them so soon they'll be just like me. Crazy over Prince headbang

It's funny that I opened the forum to this thread. I was just arguing with a co-worker who claims to be a Prince fan, but refuses to believe that Prince helped shaped the career of The Time and others.

He also argued with me...or at least cast doubt...on the fact that Prince has written for countless artists under the years and has produced for them.

I need proof that Prince helped shaped The Time's career. He was the "Svengali" of the Minneapolis sound and either wrote or co-wrote tunes like "777-9311" and others for the time. This co-worker believed that I was lying because he couldn't understand why Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis would work under Prince, since they're already talented. I tried to explain to him that they DID work for Prince and were fired when they showed up late for an Atlanta gig.

Can someone help me out on this?

Also, I need a complete listing of songs that Prince has either written or produced for others. This guy didn't even believe me when I said that Prince co-wrote "Love Song" with Madonna. I need help with this.

Thanks! [I'll also make a new thread about it]

You see thats the #1 issue with Prince...People get so wrapped up in his image and persona they completely lose track on how brilliant a musician Prince happens to be....

And that IS the saddest aspect of Prince's career. No one believes or gives him credit for his brilliance. No one believes that he has contributed so much to music and other artists. It's the SADDEST aspect of his career. No one will fully give Prince his due until long after he's gone...

Agreed. I can't see how a band like The Cure or Depeche Mode wouldn't like Prince or least appreciate him as an artist, if not for his music...

If they only knew. Seriously. He has to be the most prolific of current times.

It's because the media hasn't really shed a lot of light on this. They sorta do...but pepper it with other things like his past. His brilliance gets lost in the shuffle...though I have to say this year, we've seen a lot of Prince Praising and a reembracing of his music. Though it's a celebration of the old and a blind eye to the 90's...well more of a "we'll forgive him for that" sort of thing.

On topic. My working relationshipp with a co-worker is strained due to him not likeing P and just not leaving it alone. Like he feels as though he has to egg on the conversation. Or did. We haven't talked about it in a few months. But the last time...he was saying things like Prince wasn't even a has been...he was a never was. Crazy shit like that. pissed got me so mad. Well, he's just an idiot who bases his theories on nothing.

He actually gets made fun of because I am sure this is not the ONLY subject he has run his mouth on. I just let him be.

I work with a bunch of haters, too. I was told today that, "I must be in my second childhood" because I'm so excited about the Philly shows I'm going to next week. I told them that I'm not in my SECOND childhood, I've been able to keep my childhood alive throughout my life and thoroughly enjoy life. Shut them all up!!!

All of the co-workers that use 2 hate on Prince have stopped after his R&R induction performance and after his concert in Cincinnati. Some of them went 2 the concert and was floored and came back 2 work the next day acting like groupies. I did'nt have 2 say 1 word, i just wore my wristbands with the symbol on them and smiled!

My second day at the new store i work I spent listening to Abba.

hmm

Bookstores are littered with gay employees. So I made a point to rave about Franz Ferdinand, which drew blanks. Only my very hip merchandise colleagiue knew them and liked them too! She is going to be my partner in crime, musicwise. Her bf works there too and loves oddball jazz. So he and I get along musically too. The rest I have to re-educate.
