Lovesexy is the 1

Hi,

Everyone talks about the Sign O The Times video being his best live performance and so on but, for me, I think the Lovesexy videos are way better but never seem to get the credit that they deserve.

I love all of it but especially his guitar work in If I Had A Harem, his piano solo (and the ridiculous costume that made him look like a cross between Mozart and Elton John!), his humour in Let's Go Crazy (go go go, go go go....), Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette (he does a small dance and finishes it off by plucking his suspender belt - hilarious!), Bob George for the great comical imagery, and Prince & Cat both scoring a basket to name but a few.

Lovesexy reinvigorated my interest in Prince again when I bought it a few years ago because it showed, again, how great a showman he really was, and how far ahead he was of his contemporaries.

How do you rate Lovesexy against SOTT?

I'll probably have a couple little sexies on the stand-by, and we don't want to upset them, do we? So you just glide by me and say...what?

I also prefer Lovesexy. If for nothing more than his and Cat's dancing on Glam Slam or Miko's playing on Anna Stesia.

I think the reason people talk more about the SOTT video than the Lovesexy one is because the Lovesexy one is not an official release (at least in the USA). Only the hardcore fans in the USA who have access to boots have even seen the Lovesexy video, whereas you can buy SOTT from any video website.

Ooops. After re-reading the thread, I think I was wrong. boxed I'm just KEEEEDING!

Here's my take on the whole thing:

When the Sign 'O' The Times movie, hit the theaters, this was the only way to see Prince, on this tour. Unless you flew to Europe and caught it, this was the only way. So in November of '87, we thought this was the greatest show in the world. I had only seen Prince in concert 1 time at this point (July 3, 1986), so the movie was great!

Now, Lovesexy rolls around through the States, I sit in the 15th row (November 3, 1988) and it changes my life. The interpretation of the album, in the round, 2 acts, older hit songs, plus new and unheard (I didn't have my copy of the Black Album yet)... words cannot describe, how great this show was and is.

Nothing he had done before, and nothing he has done since, can even come close to Lovesexy '88 Live!

The only thing better than the Dortmund show, would be a professionally filmed American show, if it was available. I have quite a few American concerts on cassette and he just took it to a whole new and higher level than the European shows. The American concerts were more intimate (most arenas were half full) and he performed at least a half hour longer.

Lovesexy is, was, and will always be the one, 'til my day is done! Just cause he doesn't believe this way anymore, doesn't mean I have to change.

I love both shows to be honest. What you have to remember however is that SOTT is a concert movie, and therefore includes both overdubs and is filmed and edited to a higher standard. I love the look and sound of the SOTT film, and although the set list leaves a lot to be desired (unlike Lovesexy which pretty much covers every base), i still think that the performances of some of the songs are amazing. I have to say i dont like way the lovesexy stage is in the centre. I think a lot of the show looks tacky, however the set list and arragangements are excellent, and the concept is by far the best live show prince has ever put on. Closely followed by SOTT and the One Night Alone.
