Greatest Hits 2004...

Okay so Prince's 3-disc greatest hits CD came out back in '93. If you were in charge of putting together another greatest hits CD that covers his career UP UNTIL THIS POINT (Musicology included) what songs do you think would absolutely have to be on it???
I'm gonna make you love me...

heybaby

just when you think you've got everything on there that's a masterpiece, you turn around and doh! you left out maybe 10 or 15 more tracks that you never thought at first. Thats a question thats asking for a lot of homework to do first.

Even including Musicology, you're limited to a rather short list that wouldn't even fill an EP. Off the top of the dome, considering "hits" as singles that charted (R&B or Pop) from 1994-2004, I'd include:

TMBGITW
Letitgo
eye Hate U
Somebody's Somebody
The One
The Greatest Romance That's Ever Been Sold
Musicology
Call My Name

confuse This question is like a damn college exam! Wow. So many good songs to choose from.

I HATE YOU FOR ASKING THIS QUESTION! wink

Off the top of my head (and this really is off the top of my head, so I'll prolly overlook a bunch), I'd add:

Pussy Control
I Like it There
Family Name
When Eye Lay My Hands on You
Now
Cinnamon Girl
Face Down
The Truth
The Everlasting Now
The Same December
If Eye Was the Man in Your Life
Billy Jack Bitch
Judas Smile
Comeback
Last December
The Rest of My Life
Dolphin
On the Couch
1+1+1 is 3
Circle of Amour
One of Us (it's a remake, but a damn good one)
Gold

That's the best I can do on short notice and without my Prince collection in front of me.

Luv & Peace,
Alex

Except TMBGITW, Prince did not have any true hits in the past decade, so even a single greatest hits disc would be hard to compile.

that depends on where you are from. In the Uk Betcha By Golly Wow and gold were bigger hits than songs like:

I would Die 4 U
Pop Life
I Could never take the place of your man
I wish U heaven
Money Don't matter
Montains
Anotherlover
If I was your girlfriend

Apart from like, 2 people, you'll some seriously deluded mutha-fuckers right here!!
REALITY CHECK!!!!
The question was for "greatest hits" up until this point. Apart from TMBGITW, there REALLY hasn't been ANY (Betcha By Golly, Wow, pfffff, okay, where was THAT a highly played top-ten??).
Namepeace named some songs that, while at least singles, never charted to any real degrees (and only SERIOUS fan's would've ever heard of - you REALLY wanna call those HITS??)
Others, (DroopySpew4U, Vaindandy, SmashedPotatoSkid) just pulled anything P wrote out out the air willy-nillie style and said "fuck it, I like it so it MUST'VE been a hit, weather it was released as a single, or or EVEN FUCKIN RELEASED AT ALL!!! - who cares, I like it so it MUST be a GREATEST HIT!!!!"

hmmmm....

At least 50 tracks written here are a total joke as far as HITS are concerned - wake up you fucking dreamers - they may be songs you love, but hits they MOST DEFINATELY R NOT!!!!
does it REALLY fit the "greatest hit catagory??... NO

BATDANCE, now that WAS a hit not included on the offical list....

Thanks for adding to my list, which wasn't meant to be "all-inclusive" . . . thumbs up!

In any event, are greatest hits packaged differently in US and overseas markets? or would a greatest hits compilation include the global market?

Such language. smile

No disagreement. In fact, that was the point of my post.

Finding genuine hits from '94-'04 would be a stretch. So I had to go deep for the tracks I did name, and you're correct in the sense that, other than TMBGITW, none really charted in the US top 10 on the pop music charts. But to the extent they hit top 100, to even make an EP you'd have to include those.

BATDANCE, now that WAS a hit not included on the offical list....

Because it was recorded in '89, and the question required us to compile hits since the first compilation dropped in '93.

Yeah, but the original post was about updating the old 3cd set released with more modern stuff. Seeing as a lot of that cd was made up of non-hits, it seemed approriate to make an updated version in exactly the same way, particularly as he's only really had a few hits since then. For most artists a greatest hits compilation simply refers to their best songs / a singles collection / or their biggest hits, not a hit single in the purest sense of definition.
