the most underrated prince album

chaos and disorder.
i listen to that album more than any of his '80s stuff. i think it's that good. "dinner with delores" is classic, along with "zannalee" (spelling?) and "i rock therefore i am."
which prince album do you think is the most overlooked?

Emancipation, that disc really did it for me. Yeah, like always their were a couple of throw-aways (Da,Da, Da & White Mansion), then he has some incredible stuff like (Soul Sanctuary, Dreamin about U, Holy River, and one of my top five of all time.....The Love we Make. As well as the incredible cover of Betcha By Golly Wow). I wish the general public could have heard more of this stuff, he would have been back on top. But hey, that is my opinion.

interesting that you said "white mansion" was a throw-away, cuz that was my favorite song on that album. smile
i agree with you that more people should have gotten into that album. it's really inspiring. i couldn't sleep the night before "emancipation" came out.

Emancipation definitely! It's down to $10 for the entire set in most stores. Anyhow, White Mansion kicks butt! And Saviour! And how about Sex In The Summer? And possibly my favorite - Joint 2 Joint...Holy River, and I Can't Make U Love Me.

Definitely one of my favorite albums, period.

I would have to say The Truth disc that came as an "extra" to Crystal Ball. It was accustic, had all the classic Prince elements, and was rather bluesy. It made me wish he had played Robert Johnson in the movie he was offered. (Hey, whatever happened to that project and The Dawn, anyway?) The Truth was very heartfelt and different. It shouldn't have been disregarded by Prince and thought of as icing on the cake... although I am VERY grateful to have gotten a slice.

I don't know if it's the most underrated album, but I think the Batman soundtrack is underrated.

The Future, Electric Chair, Partyman, Vicki Waiting, Scandalous and Batdance are good songs, IMHO. And I don't even dislike Arms of Orion as much as most do. wink

But Lemon Crush is shit...

TGE.
this album was great, his best of the 90s (IMO). but because of all the name change crap, by the time this album came out, no one really paid attention except for hardcore fans.
every review i read of this album was more interested in cracking 'the artist formally known as -insert lame comment here-' jokes than paying attention to the music.

virtually most any prince album that came out after 1989...

However, probably most underrated for me would be controversy.

Any album he has released since Lovesexy is underrated.
Lovesexy was dogged when released in 1988.

To all new fams,
Prince's music is sometimes better 5,10 years later.I didn't like lovesexy until 1992.Hated Parade until 1990& totally refused to listen to AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY until 1997.

ya, Exodus is the hottest. Count the days, all time fav song. definately way underrated. but i have 2 say Batman soundtrack. nobody even thinks of that. but think of stuff like partyman remix, (introduction 2 Candy D.) and Sex, and Scandolous Sex Suite. ( i know im naming all the B sides, but its the same period. but come on 200 balloons? i had a batman symbol tanned on my arm when that came out. i called my girlfriend Vicky Vale. people forget!

I think Come is the most underrated Prince album. The music is great and the lyrics are introspective. It's just that the sound is darker than people are used to from Prince. I remember Loose playing in all the clubs when it came out!

I don't agree that Emancipation or Gold are underrated -- they were highly rated when they came out. Gold had the front page of USA Today with a perfect review. I am saying that these are among his BEST, not among his "underrated".

And Exodus? It's really not that good. The songwriting is amateurish, and the overall tone is weak. The segues are just dumb!

Moonbeam

Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic- I believe it's a wonderful collection of songs.

Controversy- Many believe it's a cheap Dirty Mind 2, but I think it stands in its own light as a wonderfully consistent album.

The Rainbow Children- There seems to be a new backlash against this album, but it is great! Those of you who wanted Prince to be bold again had your wishes granted with this album.

IMO it is the Batman soundtrack...
I think it works very well as a soundtrack and still it contains truly memorable songs like "Partyman", "Scandalous"
and "The future".

Well the truth must b said, but I think the majority of Princes' albums were all underrated after "purple rain". Other than sign o' the times. But yet again he is held on a higher plain than most other musicians. His music style is on another planet compared 2 the likes of any 80's/90's so called musicians. Just like Carson Daly said in his Mtv interview w/ Prince: "The music 2day is disposeable". Now I know being a Prince fan I'm going 2 sound bias. But in my OPINION music has drastically lost it's true meaning. The music industry is mainly 2 blame 4 this situation. They create the superstar, and milk them 4 every penny they can get. Once the public moves on they're is nothing left but an empty soul. So anyway yes Prince albums r underrated.

I give my vote to "Come", then the prince album.

As for Chaos & Disorder, I think it's hardly underrated. It's at the bottom of the pile, right where it belongs.

I agree that here in Europe he hasn't received any attention in the 90's eccept for TMBGITW. Therefore all of the albums in the 90's are in my definition underrated. I just love TGE, Emancipation and how about when he finally decided to release The Black Album ? It's sad that it is mostly us old prince-fans that gives full attention to the new material from prince. The young people of today don't know what they're missing.

As for his music being better 5 to 10 years later. I've always hated Parade eccept for Sometimes It Snows In April. I'm looking foreward 2 the day that I can fully appreciate this album. Nevertheless it is true for Exodus since i'm becoming more and more fond of it. But why does it have to have all the interludes. Just listen to Cherry, cherry and Count The Days.
I'll have another glass of you.
this time on the rocks.
