Last December or Gold? which one amazes you more? just listening to Last December at 2 am..I got to thinking..what an amazing song. the feeling and energy is waaaaay more than anything on Musicology (sorry to say). Probably the only thing close to it recently is Gold..so who do you go for...Prince/Bland or Prince/Blackwell? you look better on your facebook page than you do in person

That is a HARD question. Wow. Um, although this is like picking between my favorite child, I'm going to have to go for Last December. Luv & Peace, Alex Clubbin' in Mpls/A Night w. Prince[/quote]

The track "Gold" is awesome and is far superior to "Last December" IMO.
My only gripe is the first 2 lines: "There's a mountain and it's mighty high You cannot see the top, unless you fly" Surely, an artist of Prince's songwriting craft could come up with better than that! What do you think? --------------------------------------------------

Gold was a good song but Last Decemba was far superior in every way.
1) lyrics for Last Decemba have a universal and far greater message than the self-indulgent lines found in Gold 2) guitar playing: Prince tears it up in Last Decemba and his playing is far more inspired than anything found on the ENTIRE GOLD ALBUM 3) vocals: you might call it a tie up until the end of Last Decemba when Prince and his choir offer up some goose bump , tingle all over , angellic harmonizing. This part of the song has often brought a tear to my eye. 4) production : while i did think Gold was a good song, i have always felt the production was a bit overdone. ie: too glossy . thought he was aiming for the mainstream pop crowd with that one. where as with Last Decemba , he seems to be doing it more for himself. I'll get punished for saying this, but I'm not much of a fan of either.
If I had to chose I"d say Last December becuase it's instrumentation is superior to Gold, and it's time signatures are more complex. It's just the Graffiti Bridge feel to it ain't for me. As for Gold, I find it more emotionally rivetting, but it sounds like the kind of song that Britney Spears would have a try at.

They both suck goat's ass but if I had to pick one I'd go with "Gold".

No contest here at all.
The amazingly energetic, high adrenaline stunner Gold beats the well crafted but preachy Last December easily. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Last December. I'm not too keen on the JW undertones of the song, but over all it is the better between the two.
I think he got tired of the public's perception that Purple Rain was his signature song, so he challenged himself to create a new one: Gold. Suffice to say, it didn't work. [This message was edited Wed Aug 18 8:23:41 2004 by LovesexyIsThe1] Lovesexy Funkateer

Gold is a great song..but the lyrics seem kinda ordinary, almost pedestrian by Prince standards. Last December just seems more introspective and thought provoking....this could have closed out UTCM ***almost ***as good as SISIA (waiting for hisses and boos)
if your last december came what would u do? would anybody remember 2 remember u? you look better on your facebook page than you do in person

Definitely Last December
Any song that can make me sing "In the name of the father in the name of the son" must be pretty great. I don't like the first line "If your Last December.....came." But I love the end. I think it maybe is not as good a pop song as Gold, but moves me more, and keeps me more interested. I think Gold is cheesy. I might have thought the same of Last December, but it had the advantage of coming out after Gold. I like the line "What's the use of being young if U ain't gonna get old?" Also "Even at the center of fire there is cold (actually true, my science teacher taught me so long ago)" Check this song out at:
