If U value Prince's guitar playing, DO NOT watch this version. They mixed Prince out at the end, which is the 'crowning glory' of this solo... All U hear is the other guy playing at the end, and playing not 2 well either, compared 2 what Prince played... I have the original broadcast on VHS, and the end of the solo is beautiful.

That is, unless the folks at George's site have changed it since I found out.

Peace.

Giovanni.

That whole performance, not just Prince's part, was brilliant. So amazing I sat there and cried. I coulda done without the dramatic exit and guitar tossing, but otherwise it was one of my favorite live Prince moments.

oh pahlese everybody knows that prince stole that show from them, thats why they mixed his part out!!!!! It's so obvious. Prince turned that song out, and i guess they didn't like it, as it is so called "showboating"...well like the saying goes, if u got it, flaunt it.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Yeah, I don't like the way they mixed out Prince's part at the end on the Harrison site.

I like that Prince threw his guitar at the end and walked off. To me, it seemed as if Prince did teach them a lesson and sort of just did his part tossed the guitar to end the lesson. All of those fools had forgotten how great Prince is on the guitar and were shocked. Then again, you could look at it as Prince leaving the applause to them (Petty, Lynn etc..).... or to George Harrison himself and Prince wasn't going to take the applause. Who knows..

It seemed to me that he could have cared less what the other schmucks on that stage thought of him. Perhaps the theory that one of them said something and he was pissed and wanted to teach them a lesson is correct. I don't think he would have even agreed to do if it weren't for George's boy, Dhani. You could clearly see he was playing his heart out for the kid who lost his Dad. You could also see that the kid appreciated it and loved it. I think it may have been an emotional moment for P as well, and that's why he walked off the stage so abruptly. That solo was TRUE PRINCE and will never be matched or beaten by anyone ever. I'm so glad I got to see it.

yeah, every time i see that performance it seems like Dhani has love in his eyes when he looks at prince. i'm kidding, of course, but i do think that he really appreciated just how much Prince put into that performance. some incredible guitar work that i hope open the eyes (ears) of non-believers who doubted or didn't even know of prince's prowess on guitar.

Wow. Its funny its assumed that a stage full of legends would all be jealous. They were all getting the same honor. Who says that no one else was capable of "turning it out"? You fanatics are hung up on this "everybody's out to get Prince" BS as if everyone else even CARES as much as some of you do. Some people thought it was disrespectful. Go to some musician/guitar sites. There was a lot of talk on other sites about the performance and Prince looking more like he was trying to steal the spotlight rather than honoring the moment. It wasn't the Prince Hall of Fame show. It was supposed to be a collective honor. I guess he missed the memo. There are plenty of guitar players who would eat Prince alive, but that doesn't mean they would choose that type of a moment to do so. It was a nice solo, granted. It was showboating. It was tactless. Hey, what'd they expect? It was Prince. When is Prince NOT all about Prince? He's not known for playing nice with those not linked to him or on his payroll. See he didn't grace the stage with Funkadelic/Parliament/EWF on the other show? Try that solo showboat sh*t with BlackByrd McKnight and Mike Hampton on stage and it wouldn't go the same way as the R&RHofF did. I still say Robert Randolph took Prince to school in regards to solos that night. Robert is off the hook and highly underrated.

mister blaque knight ,with all respect there is an aspect i agree with you.
that aspect is that yes robert randolph is great guitar player.
well aspect i don't agree with you,
is that you say that prince tried to steal the spotlight.
man that night he was bringing pure raw emotion.
that is all that matters.
george hArrison son was liking what prince did,
so are the rest of the crow,
just look at the video where tom petty is mimicking with his eyes to prince in the "go for it "style.
i know one thing most opf the times prince plays guitar he plays it with his soul,
just like jimi hendrix did.
that is the thing that is so special about him.
with that guitar solo prince totally gave respect to late george and he would definetly be proud.
and everytime someone rave about how good guitar player prince is ,u start to sound bitter.
how do you know that somebody else would upstage prince on guitar while they are on stage with prince.
maybe steve vai would bring us more tehniq(i love his playing by the way) but maybe prince wouyld bring us more raw emotion.

Let's not start with the silly ideology that Vai is all technique. Go listen to "For the Love of God" live or damn near anything else. Have you been to a Funkadelic show and heard Blackbyrd do Maggot Brain? Mindblowing. So much soul it ain't funny. How do I know another guitar player could upstage Prince? Easy, because there are a lot of guitar players who are better at playing than Prince is. That's how. It doesn't mean that they would or wouldn't choose to do it during a dedication. I stated that on other sites, cats were bitching about Prince. Go visit some other message boards and plead your case. There are others who interpeted Prince's actions as showboating. Lots of others. It did get him some respect points, too because there were people who didn't know that Prince plays as well as he does.

I don't think Prince was trying to steal the spotlight at all. If he were, then the performance would have begun as it ended, with him front and center. Instead, he stood off on the side (right side) of the stage, basically in the dark, playing his guitar, out of the clear view of the television audience or of those who were there. It reminds me of when he played with Macie Gray's band, but wore a face-cover and wig and never looked up. I think that was during the tribute to Janet Jackson. Nah, I don't think he tried to steal the show. He did Harrison's memory and work justice, IMO.

A solo is the time to showboat. The word solo indicates that the stage is yours-- alone. You don't keep it in the pocket (or whatever terminology musicians, etc. use). He probably extended it more than some would like but when you're feeling it you go with it. Prince obviously had a point to make and he did that. As for somebody being better, that's personal taste. You can pull 10 Vai's out of your ass and I'd still take Prince. Is he my favorite? No, but he's up there.

Once again this is a misguided thread. How many times are we gonna argue whether Reggie Miller is a better shooter than Michael Jordan? neutral

harrison jr was thrilled with the performance -- "where's Prince?! I want to hug him!!" -- he was smiling ear to ear -- that's what counts -- others will criticize nonetheless

it'd be interesting to know what happened during the rehearsals -- someone obviously knew Prince could pull off the solo, so it wasn't exactly a surprise to the others in the band -- tho, i wouldn't be surprised if Prince showed off a lot more during the live performance than he did during any rehearsal
