I was just going to post that link myself.

I am not familiar with any of those artists, either. neutral

Weird.

I have the "Party O The Times" tribute album that was released in 1999. Some of it is pretty good. The tracks are as follows:

I Would Die 4 U - Missing Persons Dale Bozzio
Darling Nikki - Rebeca Romun Stamos
Head - Ice T
Sign O The Times - Heaven 17
Irresistable Bitch - Mellow Man Ace featuring Geo
Pop Life - Dead Or Alive
U Got The Look - Gary Numan
I Wanna Be Your Lover - Loleatta Holloway
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man - Sigue Sigue Sputnik
Baby I'm A Star - Buddy Miles
1999 - Adeva
Controversy - Information Society
Little Red Corvette - Meeks

Yes, I have the one with Rebecca Romijn-Stamos on it-- she can sing, although this isn;t the best song for her to prove it with. But it is my favorite track on the CD, very sexy.

Though I myself have never heard her version of 'Darling Nikki', I've heard others discuss it a few times and the general consensus was that she sounds, well..like shit.

the only song from a prince tribute compo that's worth anything to me is some weird kinda-sorta cover version of "sexy dancer" that peaches did a couple of years ago.

I quite like the "If I Was Prince" tribute album, featuring the aforementioned Peaches cover of "Sexy Dancer". nod

There's another Prince tribute album with more popular artists. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos sings Darling Nikki on it. I haven't heard that album yet

I agree, its funny and really experimental album. Small, quite unknown, mostly electric bands/artists. Apart from Peaches, great Simiam perhaps one of the more known names.

Recommended album really.

I would rather stick a thumbtack in my dick than buy a tribute album. I've never bought one, never will. Call me old-fashioned.

ANY tribute album? Because the Carpenters tribute album is quite good (Sonic Youth's cover of "Superstar" is brilliant, actually) and there's a nice Gary Numan tribute comp with St. Etienne and Magnetic Fields and all kindsa good bands on it that I totally recommend...believe me, both CDs are far more enjoyable than a tack through the dick. nod

falloff ouch!

I've seen this tribute album eh...eh. That's it ...eh. There are better tribute albums as the ones you mention (they ain't all bad). Senior Coconuts Tribute Album to Kraftwerk is pretty nifty..but then so is anyone who can put the door's riders on the strom to salsa music.

But on the topic...I have not heard that many covers of P's work that are that good. Some really border on the cheesey...some do border on the brilliant (Soft Pink Truth's Make up and this Spanish accoustic Erotic City come to mind) but they are far and few. I think it's simply...he's a hard act to follow and he doesn't construct too many a tune that can be universally sung....by too many. I think it can be the lyrical content, his voice and the way he sings things semi dictates how songs can be sung.

I dunno, a tack through the tip of a dick can be worth five liftetimes of joy for a masochist.

Seriously, I have never bought a tribute album.

Quite a bit OT, but I always like the Hindu Love Gods version of Raspberry Beret, and I have a good live version of 17 Days by Living Colour.

But this thread isn't about covers, it's about tribute albums. Sorry...

"Do Me Baby:Austin Does Prince"
has some interesting takes on it.
The two closing tracks are alot of fun!
"Sexy MF" by the Adults and a hidden one for "Alphabet St." (same group?)

What about the Symbolism album? Half the tracks are Prince covers and the other half are songs Prince gave to other artists. It's not bad.
