"Symbolic Beginning"?? Just browsing through catalogues on a website for Prince material and came across this. A 2 CD set from 1997 - I don't recognise anything on it. Anyone know what it is? Is it worth getting?

...The same track list also seems to appear on another album called Prince: The Early Years. Hmmm...

Oh yes, definatly worth it. Prince isn't featured (a lot) on vocals, but plays bass and guitar. Most songs aren't even written by Prince, but Pepe Willie.
Love, love, love is very funky. Prince covered 'if you see me' in 1982 (under a different title). Good songs. Shouldn't be too expensive either, around US$10-20 max.

There are many different titles of this album. As a one disc album it's 6 instrumental version, as a double, it's the 6 instrumentals and a second disc with the better stuff (rehearsal, demo's) And actually, I'd be interested in what other people think about this too. I know many have it, but probably never listen to it. My fav prince era is 1975-1978 (work in progress! : ), so I might be a little biased...

its nice for the collection, but its not a Prince album. Average 70s funk .

I couldn't say it any better. This was first released in 1986 as a 6 track album ... later in 1995 or so it was reissued as a 2CD set under many different titles. (To whom belong these recordings, btw?). Musically, you can hear Prince here and there ... very little input, but fine for completists -specially if one fancy his pre-Dirty Mind sound. In other words, this is one of those sets that after two-three listens you wouldn't stop and play it again. Not bad, but... BORING !

For completists: 'Symbolic Beginning' is a much more honest, much more reliable and complete release if compared to 'Minneapolis Genius'. The reason? The remastering process on 'Genius' not only leaves a lot to be desired, (what was Pepe thinking of???) but also they've badly tampered with the songs, to the point that all of them have been given a 'contemporary' disco feel, drenched with that awful reverb... it's disastrous...
You're much better off purchasing the 'Symbolic Beginning' set. The demos have not been tampered with and the remastering is crisp and clean, and definitely faithful to the original recordings. Buy it. "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person."
